Deron,

I haven't needed to do so before... well, never bothered to try to use it before... but, does PageStream give you the ability to set up a table of contents which allows  you to go directly to that page when creating a PDF file?

The example is: I have a rather extensive Music book with over 300 songs in it, and when I want to go to a specific song, is there some way to create a, say, Table of Contents, and then link that ToC so you can go directly to the page you want?  I looked in the Help/Contents and can't seem to find anything telling me how to do it.  I have a PageStream file... about 250 megs as a PDF file size... before crunching down using online PDF crunchers.  I have a long way to go to complete the book, and would like to begin creating a go-to Table of Contents to save a lot of flipping pages.

Haven't checked in a long time, but there was a place we could put our files for other people to use or improve at one time.  Will have to check your website to see if it is still there.  If you want a copy of the songebook, just ask... I do share it with other old coffin-dodgers in our Jam sessions.  It is large because I had to make the pages have larger size fonts, cuz our eyes just ain't what they used to be when we started using Pagestream in the Eighties.... :)

Hello Gil,

No, PageStream currently does not support that. Curious, how many people
on this list would use such a feature?

I could use it, although not regularly.

I’d wonder if it was possible to create a Python script to do the same. My sole 2018 resolution is to improve my (almost non-) existing Python abilities… ask me how I did at the start of 2019.

Hi all,
For years I'd have liked a 'linked ToC' feature. Not essential, but obviously it makes navigating a large document a little easier. I had considered doing something in ARexx to parse the PostScript output and generate whatever it does to make the embedded page links. Apparently GhostScript supports these when generating a PDF document.

I have especially longed for the text mark feature to work in PGS4. i.e. in the document text: "Refer to the description on page 71" where 71 is is updated dynamically by PGS depending on what page the reference is. But it's a known problem where it crashes the computer.

Cheers,
Anthony.

Sadly, it is not something that could easily be done with a Python
script. You could write one that pulled every object content and
generate your own PDF output, but that would be no small task Smile

I know there is absolutely no way to tell, but I just wonder: If PageStream HAD had that feature, how many people would have jumped on the
PageStream wagon, but because it didn't, they passed it by.  I do NOT know if any of the Windows or Mac DTP programs have the ability
to "jump" to a page by selecting something from the ToC.  If PageStream were known to have the ability to do so, people who create files with
indexes and ToC's might have chosen it over others that did not have the ability.

Just a thought.

I know if I had known PageStream could do it, I would have used it a lot... I have been working on the songbook... in PageStream... in different
iterations since 1991.   If that were put Prominently into the feature list and examples pointing out the capability, it would be a possible
selling point.

I have a friend who gets my songbook, who DID say that he can do that with other files he has.  Not a clue what program those files were
created with....

But, it is moot at the moment, cuz my files will not load into Pagestream again... as I mentioned in another post.

PgS does support PDF ToC generation. Bear with me.

While PgS does not create clickable in-document table of contents (what you asked for) there is *another* way to do a PDF ToC and PgS supports it.

Not the style you are asking for, but one that works in PDF. Essentially, a PDF can have one (or more) hierarchical lists attached to it. The PDF viewer then gives the means to expand this.

On OS X the Preview application shows a thumbnail bar to the left of the main document. Above that is a widget to select what is shown in the side bar. It defaults to thumbnails, but you can change it to “Table of Contents”.

Different PDF viewer apps have different interfaces, but any decent one should allow you to do this.

I believe that PgS generates it from the same data as the in-document ToC — select a style and check the box for “Include in ToC”. My memory is fuzzy, but I think you might have to select an option in the PDF export dialog as well.

So while you can’t use PgS to generate clickable links in the in-document ToC you *can* generate a PDF with a ToC.

Tim,

Thanks for the reply...

I have used the ToC generator... but ages ago, like 10 years ago or so.  It wasn't exactly what I wanted at the time, so kind of put the concept on the back-burner.

But, I sure wish PageStream had a "Jump to..." feature.  Kind of needed when you are dealing with 400 songs in a songbook... tedous clicking  a page at a time!

Anyone interested in a songbook, with very esoteric choices (mostly old folk, country and rock stuff).  Give my your email address and I could send it to you... upgraded almost daily, so I do send out dates usually at the end of the month.  Stuff may not be in the key you want, but it is a start.  File is crunched down to under 6 megs from about 190megs.

If you are into old music, it could be useful to someone...

Gil

If you set them up in chapters, then you can double click on the name of
the chapter in the document palette to jump to that chapter.

Otherwise, you can insert bookmarks at the start of each song and goto
by the bookmark name using the Bookmarks... dialog in the Windows menu.

Hi Gil,

Like I say, it will “jump to” the page having the text set in the ToC style. But the list of links is not part of the text of the document, instead it will be shown in a sidebar or similar.

I was going to share some documents illustrating this, but have discovered some local problems that are making this more difficult than it should be. Once I get that resolved…

Your songbook sounds neat. I’ll check with friends of mine to see if they are interested.

FWIW: a PgS generated PDF with table of contents and a video showing that, yes, the TOC PDF lists are clickable.

Give my your email address and I could send it to you... upgraded almost daily, so I do send out dates usually at the end of the month. Stuff may not be in the key you want, but it is a start. File is crunched down to under 6 megs from about 190megs.
