I've just finished wiping our and reinstalling Win10 on my old HP laptop. When I double click the PgS icon it churns for a while and then says I don't have access to that file. I have 5.0.5.8 Pro running  on my desktop computer, and can't' figure out what's different in this case. I've tried right clicking on the .exe for PgS and running it as administrator but that doesn't make any difference.

Any help or hints would be appreciated.

I run PageStream 5.0.5.8 Pro on Win10 like you do.

I remember, that in the beginning I had problems running it as well.

At that time I got around it by starting up an already created document - that seems to have ensured the startup and from there it was no problem; I would just select "Start New Document" (or what-ever it is called).

Later on it just worked when clicking the linked icon on the desktop or elsewhere.

Today I have installed PageStream in a folder outside of Program Files and Program Files (x86) - indeed, I do so with all my programs except for those few badly programmed ones that insist on living in either the one or the other folder.

It makes the use of Windows so much easier and cleaner.

I do not remember if I had PageStream in one of the two default program folders at the beginning (when I had similar problems) or if Win10 just grew up a little in the meantime.

But it is perhaps worth a try moving the program away from those default program folders?

Yes, I too, still set up all my Windoze machines as close as I can to the way I set up my Amigas. One System partition, one partition for Data, and one for Programs where I put every program I possibly can, except -like you- for the ones that insist on getting installed on the C:\ partition.

About the only problem I have with PgS now is needing to replace the .ini file that shows up in Users\Paul\Roaming\Pagestream. It seems that it gets corrupted somehow, and won't let all the separate toolbox and startup windows open with the program.

If you are comfortable with doing so, using SysInternals tools can be very helpful in sorting this sort of problem out. I haven’t done this sort of thing in years so I might not be spot on, but I think running FileMon would give you the information you need.

Basically, download Filemon from Microsoft, run it, filter it to just PageStream, then try to run PageStream. It will list every file operation PageStream attempts and whether or not it was successful, which can be very instructive in determining why it fails to start.

A related app is Regmon (which monitors registry activity).

These apps can produce a lot of output and be a bit overwhelming, but show exactly what is going on. If you do decide to go down this route I’d be happy to look at the output, but at the least Deron would be able to make sense of it for you.

You can rename the Pagestream5.ini file, for instance Pagestream5old.ini, and start PGS again. However, you have to fill in your personal info to start PGS again.
If all works correct, you could make a copy of the .ini file and put it somewhere save. So, if you have a problem again, you can replace the damaged .ini file anytime.

Not sure what happened!  I have been able to toggle between Layout/Master Page Setup/Double Sided and Single Page for months, while I am putting in songs to my songbood. Suddenly, tonight, I was going from the Double-Sided toe Singel-Soded... and suddenly PageStream refuses to change from one to the other.  It just goes into "Program Is Not Responding", and even waiting for more than an hour to do it's thing, it simply won't!  That puts an end to adding songs.

I have a copy of the file from March 31 loaded up, and it works just fine going from one to the other.  I have also loaded up the file from tonight... loads fine, can change from one double page to another just wonderfully... but when I tell the lthing to go back to single page display, it has ghosted the page and says, "Not Responding" at the top... and I am stuck with having to reboot... agani.

Any suggestions?  Or, do I have to go the March 31 file and put in all the newest songs I've entered in the lalst4 days?

Suggestions would really, really be appreciated

Not much of a suggestion, but I can’t help wondering if it is putting up a hidden modal dialog for some reason. Sometimes such dialogs are displayed behind other windows. So you could try running PgS in windowed (rather than full screen) and other applications hidden. If memory serves, on Windows PgS does one window for documents and sub windows for them inside of the one document window. Can you minimize the document’s sub window inside the main PgS window? If nothing else works try minimizing the main document window?

Good chance the document is corrupted some how, or a bug in PageStream
preventing the document from being processed.

If you want to email a copy or upload it someplace, I'd be happy to load
it in PageStream under the debugger. I can't guarantee anything, but it
can't hurt.
