but you should be able to set this from the "File -> System Preferences -> fonts" menu.
At least it works here on AmigaOne XE OS4-Final + July update. PageStream 5.0.3.3.
and PageStream 4.1.8.3

This was a bit tricky to find out: Try this it may work for you too:

0) !!!Save all you work an close all programs!!!

1) open pagestream5 or 4 ppc. it will open on workbench screen.
2) now go to the screen prefs or select mui prefs from a window with the gadgeds activated.
3) create a new public screen: I named it "PGS-PPC" and typed "PageStream Screen" as title (without quotes)
4) click on save, now PageStream should jump to this screen.
5) press RAmiga-LAmiga-Ctrl and reboot. *(This is Y you should have saved all your work and quit all programms)*
6) start pagestream and it shoul open in its screen.

hope this helps. Smile

Hello Remo,

Well, despite some problems, I'm impressed with all the versions of PageStream
you are able to 'use' on your A1. As to:

<<snip>>
R>> Yes, although one could argue about 'running'. I have version PageStream
R>> Pro
R>> 5.0.3.3 on my AmiDock, but rarely use it. It 'runs' but because of the fact

Quite so, but, as you pointed out,"not practical." Wink

<<snip>>
R>> + I can open a text frame, but Futura Book II is the only font available,
R>> but I

R> it's in the "user-prefs" drawer withing the pageStream5 drawer.

I'm not so sure about that! If 'PageStream5:' represents the path to the
directory where PageStream 5.0.3.3 is installed, then within
PageStream5:UserPrefs
there exist the files:
PageStream5 Fonts 304 ----rwed Yesterday 14:31:16
PageStream5.prefs 2789 ----rwed Yesterday 14:31:16
and those two files may be the equivalent of «PageStream4.fontprefs» but in the
PageStream5 environment. The file «PageStream5 Fonts» seems to hold information
about the various font families. On the other hand, from

5.DH0_OS40Final:> list work:pagestream/pagestream4.fontprefs
Directory "work:pagestream" on Tuesday 05-Feb-08
pagestream4.fontprefs 28566 ----rwed 06-Mar-07 18:50:27

we see that «PageStream4.fontprefs» is a fairly large file.

R> but you
R> should be able to set this from the "File -> System Preferences -> fonts"
R> menu. At least it works here on AmigaOne XE OS4-Final + July update.
R> PageStream 5.0.3.3. and PageStream 4.1.8.3

Accessing "File -> System Preferences -> fonts" reveals a long list of font
families, which were 'added' before the July 2007 upgrade. So I did an 'Upgrade'
on each family -- i.e., open "File -> System preferences... -> Fonts" then
highlight a font family and finally click the 'Update' button (for each family)
-- and now there are about 12 fonts available instead of zero and that is a big
improvement. Smile) These 12 fonts seem to be related to the file
«PageStream5RazzageStream5 Fonts»
But ..... there should be about 50 or so fonts available!?!?!? Fonts available
are:

Futura Book II
Garamond Antiqua
Garamond Kursiv
Garamond Halbfett
Garamond Kursiv Halbfett
Microstyle Extended
Movie Star Regular
Park-Avenue Regular
Times Regular
Titles Regular
Triumvirate Regular
Wedding Text Regular

A somewhat weird collection, methinks! Suspect, for example, that Futura Book II
is a hangover from old ProPage fonts, and in a previous post I claimed that this
font did not exist anywhere! Wrong again! 8-(

Yes, it did! Sort of!! Wink

The only MUI option that seemed to be selectable did not allow the full
resolution of my monitor. It kept on reverting to 1152x864 32 bit ARGB (which
happens to be the resolution of my Workbench screen) and when I asked
PageStream5 to Quit it refused and the PageStream5 'cusomized screen' hung
around and can only be hidden. In other words, there are no menus available on
the PageStream5 screen and eventually one is going to have to reboot.

Amazingly, PageStream 4 will open even with the useless 'customized' screen for
PageStream5 hanging in the background!!! That's right! PageStream 4.1.5.6 is
fully functional and I can shift from the 5.0.3.3 screen to the 4.1.5.6 screen
at will. If I now attempt to bring 5.0.3.3 back to life again, then I've
received various responses. On one ocassion, clicking on the PageStream5 icon
within Amidock brought up PageStream 5 on the Workbench screen yet the
non-functional, customized screen remained. Tried to reproduce this a second
time, and the GR complained about 5.0.3.3. However, I doubt this kind of silly
experimentation is of any value.

But thank you for the suggestions. Clearly they work better for you than me.

However, the point that I noticed in your earlier post was the fact that you are
apparently using version 4.1.8.3!! I recall persons on this list claiming that
the 4.1.8.x versions (if there is more than one) were not stable, so I've never
bothered to download that version. So ..... you are using 4.1.8.3 without
problems???

However, the appearance of MUI was an unhappy surprise! It should not have been
a surprise as I vaguely recall Deron saying something about problems with MUI a
long time ago. Since Yam uses MUI, it seems like I'm forever downloading the
latest version of TextEditor.mcp or BetterString.mcc or .....

Since
"File -> System preferences... -> Screen"
does not call out MUI in PageStream4 I was disappointed. But I suppose that
there are good reasons for pulling MUI together with PageStream5!

Ok, sorry, I missread the initial name of the file you were looking for. But anyway
what do you need it for? Smile

Maybe that file is corrupted. it happende to me once, I had some fonts listed (IIRC it was
helvetica-f) even if I removed all fonts in the prefs. and selecting this font crashed PGS
So you can make a backup and delete it. PGS5 will create a newone then.

As for so many fonts not beeing available, may it be they are in the old "softlogic" or
"intellifont" format?
AFAIK all the Amiga-PPC versions of PageStream can read only TTF, Type1 and OTF fonts.
I had to stop using a hole bunch of old fonts too..
A stupid thing is that all documents which I created with PGS4 68k do have the "palatino"
or some otherr "Softlogic Standard font" into them (as set in "File->Preferences->Types->Attributes" ). And
I found no way to remove them from the document. Even if no text
passage or whatever uses that font it is requested when opening that same document
in PGS4PPC or PGS5PPC

AFAIK MUI reads the available resolutions from the Monitor driver or whatever system-list
where all the available resolutions are listed.
So have you tried to access to MUI through its main preferences icon (usually MUI:MUI)
and to create a screen in the "screen section"?
It opens another window where you can select the resolution from.
Do not forget to set the "Auto Close" flag in the "Flags"-Tab or the screent wont close
by itsown when you quit the program using it.

As you are in MUI prefs you can go to the Windows-section and select the gadgets which
shall be shown in each MUI application: Select the first and the last one.
And finally click on use

Now, to close a PageStream-Screen wich remained open, you can try this:
Start IBrowse, click on the gadged with 3 little squares in it and IBrowse will jump to the
next available public screen. Hopefully this was the "ghost" pagestream one, if not just
click again until you are there.
Now quit IBrowse and the screen will close too.

As an effect of enabling the gadgets in MUI-prefs you can access to the MUI prefs from
all PGS4PPC and PGS5 windows, i.e. clicking the first gadget (a triangle pointing to an horizontally
long shaped rectangle) will open a pull-down menu with various self explaning entries.

I re-tried that little tutorial I gave you. You have to follow exactly the steps described,
including the reset as soon as the Windows open in that screen, otherwise pagestream is not
going to use it.Here again:

0) *Exit from all progs you do not need an save your work*
1) Double click on PageStream5PPC icon
2) "File -> System Preferences -> Screen..."
3) Go to section "Screen" in MUI prefs
4) Click on "New", Name it, Title it, Chose the Resolution, Click on the "Flags" tab and select "AutoClose"
5) Click "OK"
6) Click "Save"
7) PageStream Jumps on the new Screen.
Cool!!!!! Do not do or click on anything else but LAmiga-RAmiga-Ctrl to warm-reset your AmigaOne
9) after the reboot PGS5 should open in this new screen.

However there are some glitches:
you can start and Quit PGS only twice per session. If you reload it the third time it will open on WB-Screen.

*You are just going to have to reboot to bring back normality.*

This thing with MUI bothers me too. I really like Reaction, OTOH I can understand
if Deron for the sake of compatibility and easier way to support all AmigaOS-flavors
chooses that.

As for version 4.1.8.3 it does not seem to have problems but the ones i posted regarding the
naming for TTF fonts..
I'm going to downgrade and try the 4.1.5.6 maybe it solves that.

Cheers Smile

what do you mean with "family"? there only the drawers should be listed
where the fonts are stored.

so the optimum entry is just "sys:fonts/_truetype"

(only true type fontes really work curerntly!)

 BUT:

currently the font system has some problems. especially the refresh
functionality of the prefs does NOT work correct here. you also can see
each font drawer listed *twice*.

 what does work is:

remove the font drawer(s) completely and re-add it/them.

after that everything should be fine.

but don't forget that only truetypes really work. i hope to see this
imroved in the coming update.

I guess he grouped e.g. all Futura in one drawer, so it would be easier
to select the fonts as you need them. What bothered in PGS458k was
the screenfilling requester from the edit-palette when you had lots of fonts

..and are not really supported in PGS4 68k are them?

So I guess that's why Type1 fonts are displayed correctly on v4&5 PPC
but there is no way to print to PDF or PS without losing them. I guess I
have save as really huge Bitmaps or convert to TTF then.. Sad(

OTF are displayed too but I haven't tried to print with them though.

You are quite right, I should not have used the term 'family' in place of

OK, thanks for that.

I followed your suggestion above and installed but the 'Sys:Fonts/_TrueType'
directory after removing other entries in the "Installed Font Drawers" field of
"File -> System Preferences... -> Fonts", but here it made little difference;
i.e., 5.0.3.3 remained unmanageable.

I'll wait for Deron's announcement. Smile

Hi Remo,

Thank you for the various comments you wrote in your reply, which I have deleted
here.

From you comments as well as Steve Bowman's, it appears that version 4.1.8.3
needs a bit of work, and so I'll not bother to download and experiment.

It was very good of you to explain various approaches as to how one might get
5.0.3.3 to work more consistently, but I've given up. Thanks to Michael Merkel
I got the font problem solved, but that made little difference in terms of
response. The information given by the Edit Palette was totally confusing and
inconsistent. The built-in paragraph styles are totally weird! Yes, I could
have removed them all and started from scratch, but I didn't. After several
hours of "fooling around" and innumerably many reboots, I'll wait impatiently
for Deron to produce a useable 5.0.3.3. I'm confident he will.

Sorry for deleting all you comments (below originally) but I'll keep them on
file. Smile

An interesting problem with PgS4.5.6.1:
A Bengal font (PageStream clone of Benguiat) plays fine in PgS2.
But in PgS4.1.3.2 (the last version I can run under Amiga OS3),
any attempt to print Landscape or rotate text 90 degrees in
Portrait (even on-screen) results in the lower-case y showing
"leakage" of lots of bits on the left-hand side of the character.
Looking at the character in /TypeSmith/ shows no errors, but
the direction of the outline path looks like it may be counter-clockwise.
I can always call back PageStream2 to print these files (actually,
calendar templates), but is there an easy way to make this old
Soft-Logik font compatible with newer versions? I have some
properly-identified Benguiats, but they too have leakage
problems when used with PageStream.

Hi Geoffrey,

I can't help much with older versions right now. I am going to guess
that the path may not be closed? In other words, it simply has a line
that ends where it starts. That might explain what you are seeing.

If you want to send the font to me I can at least check it with the
latest font engine. Doesn't help you today, but it should help you soon!

For almost six years my HP Color Laserjet 2605dn was the perfect printer for
my Amiga (AmigaOne X4-GE, then SAM460ex). In particular, it was a very good
partner to my PageStream5.058 Pro. One important monthly chore was
mail-merging a meeting announcment for a certain organization. But a couple
months ago suddenly it conked out on me (fuser error).

Looking for a replacement, I soon found one (HP LaserJet Pro 400 color
M451dn) that seemed to have what I needed: Postscript and automatic
duplexing. But a look through the user manual scared me off: "When the
software prompts you, connect the USB cable to the product and the
computer." The software doesn't run on an Amiga, so likely I wouldn't be
able to use USB?

I gave up on finding a usable printer with Postscript. There's an Amiga
driver on OS4 Depot for HP PCL3, so I bought an HP Officejet 6700 Premium,
and successfully tried printing a variety of text and graphics with it.

Then I finally tried to print a PageStream document. Oops! The only printers
listed in printer set-up are Postscript and "<bitmap file>." The former has
no printer to print to. Equally discouraging, "<bitmap file>" lacks
duplexing and mailmerge. But I try it anyway. It claims to be printing,
then I have to "Ignore" a DSI, and it continues "printing" until an Alert
informs me "This data type is unsupported." What does that mean?

According to my documentation
(pgs5058/Help/PGSuser/printsetup.html#anchor1751395) I should choose an HP
non-Postscript printer from the Print Setup dialog box, but how do I get
that driver? There's a Hewlett-Packard ".rsc" (= ?) file in
Printeres/Locale/, but that's the only non-PostScript mention of HP I find.

It turns out that for duplexing I am supposed to "click Print on the File
menu, and then under the Print on Both Sides options on the Layout tab,
select either Flip on Long Edge or Flip on Short Edge," but they're talking
Windows. I suspect buying a printer with duplexing may have bewen a waste of
money. ...Unless that action sends a code of some sort to the printer ahead
of the print file, and I could somehow learn what that code is and find a
way to send it myself.

Meanwhile, I have a fairly unsatisfactory workaround (I hope; haven't tried
it yet). I can save the info side of my document as PDF and print it, then
flip the paper over and print the address pages on the back. PDF makes some
undesirable font changes that I may have to live with.

Can anyone who read this far think of anything I should know?

Ok are you are trying to install this as the system printer?

Have you tried the ppd drivers from withing pagestream? to access your printer?

I guess too much BLAH blurred my point. Due to circumstances I have
installed an HP Officejet 6700 Premium as my system printer.

It's not capable of PostScript. PPD drivers aren't going to solve the
problem. I need a printer driver that will do PCL3. I have one that
works for the apps I have tried so far (except AbiWord, which also
insists on a PostScript printer), but PageStream doesn't access it.

As I mentioned last time, my PgS5.0.8.5Pro documentation implies that
it includes (or I could install?) HP non-PostScript printer drivers.
I'm baffled by that.

It probably doesn't matter. I'm beginning to realize that mail-merge
is a strictly PostScript function, even if I had a printer driver that
could do duplexing.

Still woeful...

I don't know too much about the printers you are describing but will put
forward my limited knowledge.

You don't need a specific Postscript driver for a specific printer. The
Generic Adobe one should do: ADISTILL.PPD

I don't know if this came with PGS or not, but a search on t'internet should
reveal one.

Yes, PGS provides a whole choice of HPdrivers (though the latest ones may
not be supported fully, but you can use an older one to access the general
functions)..
You should find them in ...PageStream/SoftLogik/Printers/PPD/

You access these through the Printer requester, choosing TYPE - Hewlett
Packard then choosing an appropriate driver. There is a range of Laserjet &
Paintjet drivers to choose from.

Mail-merge does not rely on Postscript. You should be able to mail-merge to
any kind of printer (including dot-matrix!). Mail-merge just merges fields
into a document from a database. The document is then sent to the printer,
so you can see that the printer really has nothing to do with mail-merge.

Hope I've pointed you in the right direction.

Yes, there is Ghostscript for Amiga.

Search for ghostscript and whoosh (777 IIRC).

He's the guy that develops it.

I'll obliquely reply to your Ghostscript question in a reply to
another suggestion of that sort.

As to cups, I think not, for Amiga. I vaguely recall using CUPS with
the Debian Linux side of my previous desktop before it went kaput, but
I don't even remember what for.

This is getting at the heart of a basic misunderstanding of mine --
that if a printer doesn't have PostScript built in, one can't print
.ps files.

Yes, I was aware of those, and even added one myself
(HP_Color_LaserJet_2605.ppd).

I had looked at those, but because of my misunderstanding, assumed
them worthless for my purpose. Sad

Good! Except that the way I've been doing it requires the printer to
flip the page endwise and put the mail-merge part on the back. Not all
printers have automatic duplexing, and getting one with that feature may
turn out to have been a waste of money for me.

That's an 86K version. OS4 comes with AmiGS, written for PPC Amigas. I
get the idea that it works through a program called "gs" that I have
just rediscovered, "a port of GPL GS."

I have used AmiGS over the years to *look* at PS files, but I learned long
ago that copying those files directly to my printer (prtSmile worked much
faster than printing from AmiGS. It never occurred to me that what it does
is *change* PS to something other apps can handle!

I have no file 'preference.printer.' I have set Printer driver in
Printer preferences to HP_Photosmart. I tried copying that driver into
softlogik/printers, but PageStream doesn't see it.

I have no idea how to print bitmaps. I thought maybe the <bitmap file>
option in PgS print set-up might do it, but attempts to use that bring me
a Data Storage Interrupt error. I ignore that, and the activity bar in
the little "Printing" window makes it almost all the way across, and
then I get "This data type is not supported," whatever that may mean,
and an empty file with the name I provided.

AmiGS does indeed have a duplex option. I tried printing an old PS
file made from PgS with its flip-on-short-edge option and selecting
"Double sided (face down)" as "Print order" in AmiGS. The printer
printed a page, and an alert came up in AmiGS telling me it had
printed one side and I should flip it and print the other side. Not
what I hoped for, but I did it anyway, and clicked "Continue.". After
which my printer continued to say "Now printing," actually doing
nothing at all.

I thought that maybe since I had printed the file as a duplex file,
maybe I don't need to ask AmiGS to flip it -- had asking it to do so
been reduncant and confused it? -- but when I tried printing it
straight, it printed the front page and then it printed the back page
on a separate sheet.

Maybe the problem is that the file had been printed with
HP_Color_LaserJet_2605.ppd and the printer doesn't understand the
signals. I'll experiment with some of the other HP PPDs and see if I
can find a way to make the printer's built-in auto-duplexing feature
work.

My thanks to the three of you (admfubar, Wurzel, and Nigel) for your
suggestions.
