Up to now, I was unable to run the latest Pgs5 pro PPc on Sam (it works well on my A1). I am now happy to tell you that after the update to the new OS 4.1. update 1, pagestream PPC works on SAM !
Only problem : when quitting it doesn't close its screen.

Greetings from Luca

Hello Luca,

which version did you use exactly? Did you do anything special (stack?, running from shell, etc.).

I have different effects, PageStream 5.0.3.3 (PPC AOS4)
worked well under AOS 4.1, but stopped to work with Update 1,
are here other people with the same problem?
If for you 5.0.3.3 for AOS4 work have you done something
special?

Strange, for me, PgS 5.0.3.3 PPC actually stopped working after Update 1... I can get past the registration window, it opens the toolbar but then it grim-reapers on me so heavily that I can't even save the crashlog (complete system freeze).

Well, isn't *that* a fine howdyado!

I get the little startup window, last message is "Loading filters," and then
it stops. Of the two times I tried it, one led to a computer hang. I guess
I'm going to have to set up a OS4.1.0 partition, because I need PageStream.

Another oddity is that I tried 5.0.5.3, the one with the GR requiring
"Ignore DSI errors" and lots of yellow alerts. Well it came up (slowly),
and I was able to open a window and do some typing and object making with
no Grim Reapers or Recoverable Error Alerts until it and the whole machine
finally died and I had to click the reset button.

I have PageStream5.0.3.3 Pro 06/19/06 both on A1 (G4) and Sam. It always worked on the A1 but not on Sam. Now it works on both and I did nothing special (oh yoes, may be in the past I tried to rise the stack ? don't remember).

I also need and use PageStream. Version 4..5.6 (IIRC) works well. Until a version 5 works, I will stay with PS 4.

Version 4 quit working on my A1 shortly after my first experiments with 5.
The latter didn't work as well as 4 had earlier, but much better than 4
when 4 didn't work.

It looks like maybe I had better try to reinstall 4 again.

It is version 4.1.5.6 that I use. I could not print in AmigaOS 4 with it but otherwise it worked fairly well. Every once in awhile I would get a dsi error but once pass that all did well. As I print via PostScript output on my Vista computer I am not concerned with printing.

I do look forward to a working version 5 Pro and now with Deron making progress that day may not be that far off.

That version prints perfectly to my Postscript laser printer.

Non-Postscript printing isn't really practical on Amiga.

I still hope to eventually figure out your secret. I used 5.0.3.3
successfully enough for months, but can't get past the welcome window
("loading filters") with OS4.1.1.

I spent some time examining Snoopy output. Loads of line sequences like
this, over and over again:

00427 : PageStream5 : -----> RunCommand(0x19D62C89
"AppsRazzageStream5/SoftLogik/Filters/PageStream2.dfl",,"",0)
00428 : PageStream5 : 0 =
FindSegmentStackSize("AppsRazzageStream5/SoftLogik/Filters/PageStream2.dfl")
[638uS]
00429 : PageStream5 : <----- RunCommand(0x19D62C89
"AppsRazzageStream5/SoftLogik/Filters/PageStream2.dfl",,"",0) = -1414660371
[0xABADFEED] [991uS]

I'm not sure what this means, but I suspect that last hex number might
really be an English clue. BTW, the files in question, such as
AppsRazzageStream5/SoftLogik/Filters/PageStream2.dfl, are right where they're
supposed to be.

This also caught my attention, though it only occurs once:

00239 : ENV : FAIL =
Lock("ENVARC:mui/PAGESTREAM.1.prefs",SHARED) [132uS]
00240 : PageStream5 : FAIL = Lock("env:mui/PAGESTREAM.1.prefs",SHARED)
[340uS]

So I moved PAGESTREAM.1.prefs in from my OS4.1.0 envarc: into OS4.1.1, with
the odd apparent result that now when I try to Snoopy the program into a
file, it goes on and on in the Snoopy window, but quits saving to file
after a few dozen lines at most, before anything about PageStream appears.
I haven't tried removing the prefs file and trying again yet.

Another thing that keeps coming up over and over (when Snoopy saves
properly) is this:

00271 : ENV : FAIL = Lock("ENVARC:ELF.LazyBinding",SHARED)
[95uS]

So far as I know, I have never had such a file in envarc:.

I'm obviously interested in you figuring this out as well Wink I have
been playing with removing the prefs etc to try and get a failure here
but so far nothing strange... I think if I could find a version of
mungwall etc that ran under UAE it might help.

Anyway...

No, the -1414660371 is the return code from the loading of the .dlf. It
basically loads up the module (which is just a small program), runs it,
and if it returns this special value, then it know it was an actual
PageStream module and not some random program someone happened to copy
into the Filters folder. (it does other things including setting up some
tables that can be used to call back into it plus identify what kind of
module it is, etc).

That should just be the MUI defaults for where to open the PageStream
screen.

Then -1414660371 = 0xABADFEED? I haven't done hex conversion for a long
time, and I never got comfortable with negatives, but I assumed "ABADFEED"
was a clever programmer's clue to some kind of bad "feed."

I was at least partially wrong about the Snoopy failure. If I ask again,
after the fact--after stopping Snoopy from tracking, then the file is
saved. But it is a stranger one, never gets to the point of looking for
filters, but after these two lines,

00321 : PageStream5 : o.k. = Open("FONTS:_TrueType/DejaVuSans.ttf",OLD)
= [0x1A3246F4] [168uS]
00322 : PageStream5 : o.k. = ExamineObject(0x69246B8Cool [31uS]

repeats this kind of stuff over and over (I stopped recording at line
00429):

00323 : PageStream5 : o.k. =
ChangeFilePosition(0x1A3246F4,0,OFFSET_BEGINNING) [10uS]
00324 : PageStream5 : o.k. =
ChangeFilePosition(0x1A3246F4,388632,OFFSET_BEGINNING) [7uS]
00325 : PageStream5 : o.k. =
ChangeFilePosition(0x1A3246F4,204,OFFSET_BEGINNING) [5uS]
00326 : PageStream5 : o.k. =
ChangeFilePosition(0x1A3246F4,12,OFFSET_BEGINNING) [5uS]
00327 : PageStream5 : o.k. =
ChangeFilePosition(0x1A3246F4,388620,OFFSET_BEGINNING) [4uS]
00328 : PageStream5 : o.k. =
ChangeFilePosition(0x1A3246F4,437124,OFFSET_BEGINNING) [4uS]
00329 : PageStream5 : o.k. =
ChangeFilePosition(0x1A3246F4,33000,OFFSET_BEGINNING) [6uS]

With regard to ENVARC:mui/PAGESTREAM.1.prefs, I have vague memories of
having trouble with that some years back, but I'm alos pretty sure that
PageStream itself created the file. Here is what I have in my OS4.1(.0),
where vers. 5.0.3.3 ran, cripple but pretty much crash-free:

PAGESTREAM.4.prefs 434 ----r--- 23-Mar-09 14:25:47
PAGESTREAM.11.prefs 434 ----r--- 23-Mar-09 14:25:47
PAGESTREAM.1.prefs 434 ----r--- 23-Mar-09 14:25:47
PAGESTREAM.3.prefs 434 ----r--- 23-Mar-09 14:25:47
PAGESTREAM.2.prefs 434 ----r--- 23-Mar-09 14:25:47

Notice all are dated back in March, just about the time I gave up trying to
get the latest version 4 to work (last file in PageStream4/ is dated
2009-02-23) and started using 5.0.3.3 exclusively. In fact the five
files are identical, and all mention 50675335 00004D55 49570000
....PgS5..MUIW..

I wonder how many of us really need this Amiga program. Probably not enough
to raise enough funds to get you a SAM, I'm afraid.

This may be worth seeing if we could raise the price of at least a
motherboard for Deron. I would contribute to the cause though most of
our assets were permanently erased in the early downfall of the
economy.

Perhaps we could try for a stimulus grant!Smile

I don't think this is a big problem. When I get back to OS4 development,
we can look at why the 68k doesn't work for all on OS4. However, I
suspect that the issue is something that will effect all 68k users, we
just need to track it down.

I should have a new run at this uploaded in a few days. Thanks for all
the feedback, keep it coming!

I just have read about Pagestream 5.0.3.3 is running on AOS4.1 update 1 for
some and I thought, I give it a try.

Before the update1, on first startup, the registration window appeared and
then a window to set some installation path and then nothing. No error
message, no crash, no freeze, simply nothing. Each other try to start
Pagestream 5.0.3.3 didn't bring up anything, too.

Now with Pagestream 5.0.3.3 on AmigaOS4.1 update 1, Sam440ep, it works!
It never worked for me, but now it works! On workbench, the toolbars appear
and i also can open a new document and editing some text! Cool! Very Happy

I have nothing else done so far, I just was so surprised, that I had to
immediately report it to the ML Smile

Pretty much the opposite of my experience, except with the OS update I no
longer get past the welcome window.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you for a complete list of your devs and
libs directories, as well as a copy of your user-startup and "list
<path-to>PageStream5 all."

Just kidding of course, but there's got to be a reason why you and Luca can
run it and so many of us cannot.

I do have the experience you describe with my PageStream 5.0.5.3, including
saving the text I write, as well as changing fonts and using the text frame
and polygon tools. But I crash if I try to open the files that came with
the program, such as "Welcome to 5.0.pgs."

It isn't just AOS4.

Version 5 in 68k doesn't work on Amithlon either.

Version 4 continues to be very useful.

I think this is a very sensible idea. Let me put this straight: if we want PageStream to have a future on OS4, Deron must be in possession of a modern and reliable hardware to develop on, and running the latest version of the OS. Otherwise it will always be this "oh, it works on my machine, how come it doesn't work on yours?" sort of thing we are having here at the moment.

I can confirm it does not work on Classic Amiga hardware either, A1200
Mediator TX, Blizzard PPC+060/50 SCSI, with Voodoo 3 3000 gfx card, etc.,
but as there is thought to be no Stack tool for 68k then I cannot forward
much information of any use to Deron to show this.

I got a little way with PgS 5.0.5.2. which anyone can see from the
screengrabs I did, if anyone cares to have a look on my simple website link
...http://www.pearson.1to1.org/PgS5a_Grabs/

But with PgS 5.0.5.3 I got past the registration screen then nothing, and
eventually my system rebooted, or I got fed up with it tying up the whole WB
access, the mouse moved for a while, but didn't allow anything else to work,
or launch, then locked up also, and so 5.0.5.3. was for me a virtual
failure.

I agree Deron needs modern hardware to work on OS4.x but if this is a
Commercial package shouldn't the developer stump up the cash to get a system
they can use so that they can sell it for a profit. After all we have been
waiting for an age, almost an era, for our favourite DTP package to be
finished and made usable.

I believe Deron has an A4000 mothballed somewhere, but does not appear to be
using that Classic piece of Amiga hardware to develop the 68k version on,
which I for one feel very disappointed with. How can you port the software
when you aren't developing it on the correct hardware? Also, if you are
going to fix faults, well in the first place get it to work, for a piece of
Classic Amiga hardware, then you should run it as a developer on that
hardware to know where the problems really are.

I wouldn't mind lending one of my A1200 systems to Deron if I knew he would
use it to debug/develop PgS5 on.

Version 4.x.x.x. is very useful, but it is showing it's age, and lacks some
of the later features that the other versions have.

I would have liked to see the PgS 4.1.5.6 PDF filter updated to more modern
features, and capabale of reading newer PDFs in particualr, which is a very
handy feature. The original PDF filter may have resulted from one of my
suggestions a good while back.

I'll certainly give a good try, but I'm not as yet that optimistic

I fully agree..
I'm willing to donate 50 EUR for that. Can't more at the moment.
to make things easy Deron could set up a Paypal account and we all donate till the sum is reaches the price of a Sam for example.
Or we could ask someone at Acube or Amikit to take the money directly in order not to pay double paypal or whatever fees.

Yes, absolutely! But let's be realistic - can the current PgS sales justify Deron buying a SAM within a reasonable time frame? My question is: which is better - sponsoring an OS4-capable board, or waiting another eon and hoping Deron will fix all the problems by trial and error?

I KNOW this is a commercial program, and that I have already paid (three times actually, because I own three versions). But if this speeds things up and improves the quality of development (and most importantly, gives us a working version for OS4), I don't mind shelling out some extra in a bounty.

Plus, ACube could possibly be approached and coaxed into making a special offer because PgS is a major Amiga application. I know they currently stock 600MHz SAMs; with the X1000 on the horizon and the more powerful SAM Flex in stores, they may be having problems to sell the low-end model (which would be perfectly fine for software development). Worth trying if you ask me.

Daniel
