Hello,

I just downloaded and installed PageStream4.1j (pagestream41j.tar.gz
file) on my Linux machine (HP Pavilion, Mandrake Linux 9.1, GNOME
Desktop). I followed the instructions for setting up the
LD_LIBRARY_PATH and PATH and it sort of works. Well, sort of.

First problem is that I cannot type anything into registration window.
I had to copy and paste into all four fields just to get the
PageStream unlocked. Unfortunatelly, pretty much all other PageStream
dialogs have the same problem (which makes the app effectively
unusable). I can type into file selectors though.

Second problem is that the app only runs when I start it from the
directory where it is installed. If I start it from say my home
directory, it crashes before anything appears on the screen. It's most
likely some problem with libraries not being found but everything
seems to be setup correctly.

Anyway, did somebody else seen these problems and found a solution or
a workabout?

Thanx.

I saw the announcement, but hadn't gotten it yet so I went ahead and dl'd it.

Verified. I also noticed that the ... I never remember the right names for
these things ... toolbar? text cursor, arrow, etc. window is too wide.

The way I've settled on starting PgS is with a script that I put in the PgS
directory. I execute the script by clicking on it konqueror, which is a long
winded way of saying that I always start it from its own directory.

Unfortunately this version does seem a bit broken. As for the second problem,
using a portable script evades that one. Its also handy for keeping several
versions around ;^)

The startup directory is not a big deal for me, however the dead
dialogs are. I bought
the PageStream just couple days ago, so I do not have the older
versions. Is there a
place where I can download them?

Thanx.

Not as far as I know. As previous versions didn't have that particular
crippling problem it hopefully is an easy fix. Maybe a new version will be
posted soon. Deron?

Other comments on the new version:

Tool tips on all but the border tool. Nice. The font menu is nice as well, but
not sorted alphabetically. The problem with Times and Triumvirate being
listed for each style, but only as regular remains. Some other fonts are
listed twice as well (Bitstream Charter, Luxi Sans, Utopia).

Something minor, I noticed Line && Fill in the Type menu (yep, that's two
ampersands). I'm sorry I don't have time just now to check out the new
version more.

No, I just took off the old versions a couple days ago Sad

I'll be posting a new version today. I could have several days ago, but
I've been trying to figure out Anders Drejer's problem where he can't set
prefs. I see what is going wrong (extra spaces are being put into the
numbers with units, like 2500% is in the pref file as 2500 % which pisses
off the parser!), but I can't figure out how it is happening.

I may have to attack this from a different angle. This may be an issue with
the sprintf in his c library and some kind of strange interaction with
PageStream?

Hey, Anders, I have a question for you. In a new document in the bottom bar
of the window, is the current view scale displayed as 100% for example, or
100 %?

Anyway, don't know if the new version will fix the text issue as they work
fine here, but hopefully that was a transient bug introduced in trying to
get the timers fixed in a hurry.

Now this is starting to make sense! I suppose you have set your machine to
display decimal points with a , ! (Which is of course pretty common in your
part of the world Smile

I'll bet that is making something fail. Now at least I have something else
to look for!!

I am uploading one now. I started the first upload 3 hours ago and ran to
town for some stuff only to return and find my computer hung and the upload
incomplete. So, we try again..

Yea, still working on the borders tool. Thanks for the reminder. The other
tools are built in, but the borders tool is external and doesn't provide
any tips.

?? Seems sorted alphabetically to me. It goes ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ,
right? Smile

OK, this is what I found on for the Times font you sent me. FontConfig is
only finding the font name as "Times" and the style name as "Normal" for
all four styles! That is very wrong! It does recognize that they are
italics and bold variants, but PageStream (and most other reasonable
programs) will remember them by name. Obviously it will be almost random
which font you get. It should be able to find bold and italic when you use
the applied attributes, but that is probably not what you want. I can kill
the duplicates and just show one, but I think you would rather fix the
fonts and get to see all the actual variants!

Not here it wasn't. That version was alphabetical to a point, but then added
some font listings. To give an idea:

Times
Triumvirute
URW
Triumvirute
Times
Luxi

Note that this is in the /Type/Font menu, not the drop down.

Okay, I'm confused now. I loaded the fonts into PfaEdit again to verify the
font info and they have appropriate font names. The bold variants list weight
as bold. To be sure I loaded the CSTimesBold afm and pfb into vi and checked.
The Family name is Times, the font name is CS-Times-Bold, the full name is CS
Times Bold and the weight is Bold.

Just to see if it would make any difference I removed the fonts from the
system, went through and renamed (via PfaEdit) Times to Times Normal, and
added them back in. BTW, in the font installer they show up just fine with
proper names, etc. I can use them in other applications such as nedit, open
office, and the gimp.

Exactly what program were you using that gave the bad info? Maybe if I ran
that program I could figure it out. I'd fix the fonts if I could find what to
fix!

The problem with saving prefs is SOLVED in 4.1.6.11. Thanks! BTW, I
hinted about this (the . and , issue) a few weeks ago when I sent you
two prefs files Wink

Some further feedback:
Scrolling with the mouse wheel works, sort of. When scrolling without
any key it scrolls up/down, BUT also with a small amount left/right.
Scrolling with the shift key it scrolls left/right just as expected,
BUT also with a small amount up/down. Scrolling with the ctrl key
zooms in/out, but does not update the screen until I let go of the
ctrl key. This makes it somewhat hard to set it to the desired value.
All in all a very nice feature!

When trying to move the page by the scrollbars it continues to move
for a considerable time (>10sec) after releasing the scrollbar. It
also changes direction during this uncommanded scroll. Moving the
page with the middle mouse button works ok.

There seems to be a screen update problem for the last few cm of the
page. After moving the page with enough space to spare to the lower
border of the window it displays ok.

In the printsetup I now have my cups printer in the uppermost field.
Nothing else is selectable there. In the ppd field my cups driver is
shown. When I try to change this to a proper ppd the field updates,
but when reentering the dialog after saving the original cups driver
is shown again. I also tried to set the papersize to A4 but it also
resets to custom with the wrong size. In the size fields I have
commas instead of points. Can this be the old ./, issue again?

When printing nothing comes out of the printer, but when I check the
printlog I can see that a file of 31 kb has been sent to the printer.
When I print to file it also saves a file of 31 kb. When looking at
that file with a ps-viewer I see only a blank page.

Best regards,
Jan

The scale value is updated in the bottom of the window. I don't think that
refresh speeds are fast enough to let the window get updated between each
click of the mouse scroll, but maybe later.

Yes, scrolling problem still there, and still on the buglist.

Hi!

I just uploaded an update file with two replacement libs. These files will
replace two libs in the folder SoftLogik/libs.

I figured this was better than another huge download for just a few
changes. The two bigs fixes are letting you type again Smile, and changing
the font naming scheme. Tim's fonts in this case are broken as far as
FontConfig can tell, but I found others that came with the system that
behaved badly as well so I hacked my code to give them different names.
Hopefully this will resolve these problems.

I'll get to the other issues this week. Just wanted to give you something
you can use! (I'll be putting up a new postscript driver tomorrow or the
next so that those with the comma for decimal points can print).

Enjoy!

Woohoo! I'm sorry you had to resort to a hack, but I'm glad that the fonts
work now ;^) Run PgS Linux, create a new document, text tool, select font and
wa-la Times shows up in the four styles. Okay, I forgot to check to verify
that they rendered, all I did was see them properly in the list and the list
was sorted properly as well.

Next test, open an existing document. Selected the appropriate font
equivalencies and . . . Hmmm, not so fun. CPU is running 100% with PgS
hogging it. Nothing else to evidence that it is working: the document window
remains blank. It is a large document and it is changing every font in it so
I wait some more . . . Still churning . . .

Okay, there are display problems. Times Regular, Times Regular Italic and
Triumvirate Bold display, but not Times Bold, Times Bold Italic or
Triumvirate Regular. Not only do they not display, but they do not display if
the font is changed to something else that normally does display. However,
selecting all and setting the font does recover the display.

The problem (getting the text set to a different font that does display) might
have to do with text selection, but I can't get it to work whether I select
the text with the mouse or the keyboard.

After about half an hour of this I killed it so that I could run the above
test.

I should mention that fonts that worked in previous versions (just tested with
4.1j) no longer display. For example, Classical Garamond, Bitstream Chart.

Hmm. Looks like some kind of an offset problem into the list. Go to the
font chooser (type->font->select) and turn on font preview. You can see all
kinds of fonts getting out of wack. Funny thing is I had this bug before,
but I've forgotten what I did to fix it last time Sad

I see what you mean. Very strange. Well, I hope you remember without too much
trouble.

Deron,
You might have already done this, but I thought it might be worth
mentioning. Why not setup some type of internal Bug Tracker? That
would not only help you keep up with the bugs, but note the resolution
as well? Anything to cut down on you having to redo your work, so you
could get on with the work that is needed to get an operational
Pagestream, don't you think?

Just a thought,
Patrick

Hi!

Well, I don't have any specific software, I just use a text editor, but I
do have such a beast. The problem is that my Linux machine is a dual boot
machine that boots also into email. So as I write this in windows I can not
access my Linux files Smile I suppose I could keep the files out on the
server, but I hate navigating out to the server all the time. Of course,
the file is not as good as it could be, but you can't make a person more
organized by giving them different tools.

Anyway, in this case the font offset was unrelated to the previous bug. The
previous bug all fonts in the listings where offset by two because the font
listing itself was off. This new bug was because the internal list was not
sorted alphabetically but by family name then weight then italics, however
the font matching was doing a binary search on the list by name Sad That
is why some fonts displayed the proper font, and others not! Obviously I've
found and fixed that bug and a few in printing.

Including the printing problem for those who are using machines that output
276,75. I did find out that bug is a "bug" in the OS. I thought it strange
that printf would be changing periods into commas and figured that must be
the default behavior for printf but that I missed it in the documentation
the dozed times I've read it. As it turns out, the default behavior is the
leave it exactly as is. You have to specifically ask for localized output
which is what I would have expected. So someone hacked the system when they
shouldn't have. For now, I've put by own hack in to reverse that in the
postscript printer driver. I can use a better implementation of printf that
is now part of gtk, but it is only in gtk 2.2, which would require a newer
dependency. For now I'll leave the hack in, and eventually I'll boost
requirements up to gtk 2.2 and remove the hack.

I am currently uploading a new update. When it is done, I'll let you all know!

Last but not least, someone suggested I create a bugzilla for everyone else
to be able to use. I don't have a problem with that, but I am not
experienced in that and I don't have the time. So as I told that person,
would you like to do it Smile

OK, the next update is online. This should fix the font problems, and get
printing going.

I guess the next thing I need is for folks to tell me the most important
bug that stops them from using PageStream Linux. If you have something
going wrong that prevents PageStream from being used please let me know!

I've got a couple other improvements in the works also.

The biggest problem for me is still printing (also with the update from
today): Some fonts prevent printing when used (no output), some others
are not displayed (this happens with both truetype and postscript
fonts). Outlined Fonts not displaying right is also a problem for me

A little bit for the wishlist:

*) SVG import/export. SVG is commonly used for vector graphics under
Linux
*) PNG support is essential (but is already on your TODO List)
*) Something like halftone output, maybe I just didnt find it but I
would like to output grayscale images to my inkjet and with this sort of
"raster" the result will look better (especially if you want to take it
to the copy-shop afterwards)
*) Font embedding to PDFs is a must too, or at least get
Postscript-output working with all fonts (conversion can then be taken
care of ps2pdf)
*) A button to refresh the display (maybe I missed that too)

still looks very promising to me
bye

Thanks for the feedback! Hopefully others will chime in so I can focus the
next few days on the big issues that are stopping people from using it.

Other than display of rotated text, or stroke/outline/gradient filling of
text, everything should display. In other words, the actual font should not
effect the display. You can pretty quickly test the installed fonts by
pulling up the font chooser and turn on "show sample". The display code
that is drawing the text there is the same bits of code that display to the
document window.

Refresh window can be done with the redraw window script (which _should_ be
F10 by default, but I havn't checked that now that I think about it.)

You can set the fill's halftone using line & fill -> screen, and you can
set the default screen in print setup.
