Funny thing is, I figured the slow text was that the freetype engine was slow, and that I needed to implement a character cache like we have on the Amiga (freetype includes a beta cache system, but it is incomplete and I couldn't get it to work). So I spent a day building a nice cache system. (actually closer to two days reworking things so they fit into the scheme) and guess what? It made a 72 second display take 70 seconds. Hardly worth it!
As it turns out, I initially had created a _font_ cache back when I first added text support. That font cache was not working properly and it was reinitializing the font system for each character. Once I made a simple one line fix, text became useable
I think I left the character cache in, but it doesn't appear to make much difference. Timing trials showed a minor improvement, but on other systems it might make a difference.
