It finally occured to me that it might be something in my PgS prefs file that
was causing this so I tried removing it and sure enough, I can create new
documents and open old ones and they display fine without having to scroll or
refresh the window.

As an added bonus the problem of new document windows being inaccessible also
seems to have gone away! That one didn't *always* occur, just 95% of the time
so I can't be completely sure it is resolved, but it does seem likely.

I don't have time now, but I'll see about isolating the problem pref entry.

I had a *little* time and narrowed it down (slightly). It happens after
selecting "Remember Window Positions" from the menu. This also seems to
trigger the second document window problem.

Running a diff I get the following as being new:

Please! Because there is nothing in prefs that would control any of these
issues that have come up recently! (Theo's edit palette problems is
another). I am guessing instead that a pref item is causing some kind of
random memory stomp.

I renamed my prefs and restarted pgs. After registring the program
again I created a new page without touching anything in prefs. Both
issues remained the same. (Black before moving the page, crash on
pasting text anywhere.) This was after installing the last patch.

Is there a SETWINDOWDEFAULTS line in your prefs file?

I took a non-working prefs file, removed the line

SETWINDOWDEFAULTS AT 0 146 SIZE 1273 738

and it started working again. I took my original prefs file, removed the
equivalent line

SETWINDOWDEFAULTS AT 0 146 SIZE 1090 721

and it started working again as well.

Specifically: with the line in place in the prefs file any time a document
window is opened (open an existing document or create a new document) it is
filled with black. Excepting when the document window doesn't completely
initialize and remains a grey color. Hmmm... I suppose I could snap a shot of
that if it makes any difference.

With that line absent the document windows always open fine. Of course, this
is then relying on the window manager to place the files.

Caveats. I haven't tested any of this logged on as a different user. The
SetWindowDefaults command may not be at fault and only exposing the real bug
through coincidence.

Yes, in my original one I have:

SETWINDOWDEFAULTS AT 0 90 SIZE 810 903

but the one created from scratch is very short as follows (I only
removed my password):

PREFERENCE FILE
USERNAME Simonson
USERCOMPANY
USERREGNUM 6xxxxxx
USERPASSWORD xxxxxxxxxx
SETMDISTATE AT 0 0

Both problems remain the same with either prefs-file.

I figured as much from what you said, I was just making sure. There is no
doubt that, at my end, SetWindowDefaults toggles the black document window
problem. The crash on paste is another matter entirely.

So I'm wondering what else is causing the difference between our systems.
Here's a breakdown of what I have. I'm not sure what is relevant, just trying
to find something.

Well, the problem with opening multiple windows is still there -- apparently
it was just lucky coincidence before. The black document window still hasn't
happened again, but its annoying having to move it each time (it always opens
on the right screen instead of the left where PgS lives).

Further testing. Not touching the PgS prefs I went to the KDE menu and told it
to control placement of the document window. It works, but guess what? The
document window is black on open. This appears to be an interaction with the
window manager caused by moving the window and PgS updating of the window
contents.
