I don't print a lot so sometimes I don't notice when an upgrade
reduces functionality. I know that at least once in the past I was
able to print directly from pagestream4pro.

Recently I had a project which was perfect for pagestream,
unfortunately when it came time to print, things fell apart. I
selected print from the file menu, the progress window opened and
then nothing. I tried with other printers, same result. I searched
through the e-mails I've saved from the list but only found 1
suggestion; name a printer lp so that pagestream would use it.
Unfortunately that didn't help either. BTW I also have the proper
ppd file selected (as far as I can tell).

All of my kde apps print, as do abiword, mozilla and gimp.

Even though this is a less than perfect solution I tried printing to
a postscript file. That didn't work either (Pagestream 4.1.7.9 pro)
Tonight I noticed 4.1.7.12pro was available so I downloaded it,
still no printing from my printer (hp photosmart 7660) but I could
print to a postscript file.

What am I missing?
As an aside, why can't pagestream be directed to use kprinter as an
option?

I am really close to upgrading to Pagestream 5 but I can't feel
right about doing that if I can't even print w/ the version I
already purchased.

I know some of this sounds like a rant, perhaps it is, but I also
appreciate the work that has been done to bring Pagestream to
linux. I also appreciate the fact that Deron does everything he can
to help users get the most out of the program, and works diligently
to fix problems as they turn up. I just want it to work the way it
should.

I have a hard time telling my wife and daugher about the great
results they can get w/ Pagestream when I know that they will be
frustrated when it comes time to print.

I swear i've wasted more ink and paper testing printing in linux
than I've ever used for actual documents ;-(
(This isn't just due to Pagestream)

Have a good evening, I hope someone can point me in the right
direction

I can't claim to be pointing you in the right direction necessarily but I have
found Turboprint most useful for a print solution. I originally had it on
Amiga and the when a Linux version became available I gladly jumped on board.
It may help you. I just followed their installation instructions and combined
with the CUPS system it serves me well.

Another Amiga user (not terribly uncommon on this list I guess Smile
Thanks for the suggestion, I've looked at turboprint before (and am
looking again right now), I'm just really hesitant about the
possibility of messing up settings that work very well with EVERY
other program on my system. I will read up on turboprint but unless
it can be used alongside my cups/kprinter settings I'll really have
to think about using it.

BTW I currently use SuSE9.2 but plan to do a major re-install when
SuSE10.1 becomes available. That may be a good opportunity for me
to try Turboprint.

Thanks for the suggestion, It would be nice to here if anyone knows
how to get Pagestream working using the existing print cue though.
(cups/kprinter)

Have a great night!

I'm not too much up on the "hows" but as near as I can tell it just integrates
in as the "system" print function (if that's the right way of putting it),
it's not a Pagestream driver. I not only print from my Linux box but from
Winblows across my network.

I understand the hesitancy -- "if it ain't broke don't fix it" -- philosophy.
I am running a Debian distro and KDE so there's three ways to "control" the
printer(s), the "CUPS" browser interface, the KDE Control Panel or the
Turboprint utilities (xtpsetup, xtpconfig).

Try select in print setup requester as ppd file appropriate from cups
ppd config directory (on my Debian /etc/cups/ppd/ ). For my this works.

I tried printing w/ pixel (another non-gpl program) today. Although
it gives the correct name for my printer (HP Photosmart 7660) its
print jobs also disappear. (Must be a problem with closed source
progs Wink

In suse the normal ppd's are in /usr/share/cups. I was surprised to
find my printer queue names (the names of printers I've setup
through the web interface to cups, rather than the ghostscript(?)
ppd's) in /etc/cups/ppd/ so I gave it a try.
Still no luck. I tried the ppd named after the printer I normally
use in kprinter but the jobs from Pagestream just seem to disappear
never showing up in the print queue.

This message showed up in /var/log/cups...
I [18/Mar/2006:19:06:42 -0800] Started
backend /usr/lib/cups/backend/ptal (PID 30119) for job 498.
E [18/Mar/2006:19:06:44 -0800] PID 30118 stopped with status 1!
I [18/Mar/2006:19:06:44 -0800] Hint: Try setting the LogLevel to
"debug" to find out more.

Line wrap causes each line from the log to appear as 2 lines here.
The consistent thing is a long list of jobs "stopped with status 1!"
that I can definitely associate w/ pagestream (and Pixel).
I'm not sure how to set the debug level, I guess thats my next step.

Thanks for your suggestion, still looking for the glass slipper...

So your suggestion set me on the right path somehow, I tried your
suggestion, that didn't work for me. But it got me thinking.

I looked in /opt/pgs/SoftLogik/Printers/PPD/hp (the location of
pagestreams printer definitions. I had 3 diferent files that could
have related to my printer. None of these files were gzipped
(no .gz extension) so I moved up these files out of the way, then
copied
/usr/share/cups/model/HP/PhotoSmart_7660-hpijs.ppd.gz

to pagestreams /Printers/PPD/hp/ directory
then used Pagestreams printer setup to select this ppd and wonder of
wonders printing works now. I'm guessing that the uncompressed ppd
was the problem, I'm just happy to have it working.

Now to get Pixel working.

Thanks to all who offered suggestions
