Hello,
I'm having problems getting PGS documents printed correctly out of my HP
LaserJet 1020 printer. The problem I have is that PGS doesn't print
correctly
the document while other programs do. I found that the only way to print a
PGS document is by "printing to a Postscript file", open it in Konqueror
(I'm
using a Linspire system, i.e. with Debian Linux) and print from Konqueror
or GV.
What I get out of my printer when printing directly from Pagestream5 is a
printout that shows in some ways the layout of the original page being
printed
but all characters are totally unreadable as if they were out of focus: I
know,
it's difficult to explain, I'm therefore including a scan of one oof such
printouts,
may be you'll be able to tell what's wrong. I'm using an HP LaserJet 1020
Foomatic (foo2zjs) printer driver I found on the NET (linuxprinting.org).

Thanks for any help and regards.

The list strips all attachments. You can get the attachment to Deron by
emailing support@pagestream.org, by uploading the file to the files section
of the list or by uploading it elsewhere and providing a link.

I confess to not being familiar with Linspire or Debian, but how is printing
setup? Is it via lpr? lprng? cups?

A quick check on linuxprinting.org shows that the printer is marked as being
only partially functional under linux with the skim I did indicating the main
problems being firmware and lack of memory. I noticed the printer is supposed
to be 600x600 dpi, but only has 2MB of memory?

I already contacted Deron to investigate the problem and here's his reply:

Hi!

If you had not send the scan I would have never beleived it! On Linux we
strictly send along PostScript. I can't think of anyway that PageStream
could be doing a "motion blur" like that. It certainly looks like some
other issue at hand here.

If you choose <Printer File> in PageStream's print setup, and write a
postscrpt file to disk, does that then display properly using Ghostscript?
(You should be able to just double click on the file to see it after
printing it to disk).

I'm not sure, but you should not have to choose a PPD. Cups should be
providing that to PageStream for your printer, but maybe I misunderstand
because I don't know what foo2zjs is (Cups driver, PPD, ???)

Print setup is via HP LaserJet 1020 foomatic printer driver (found on
Linuxprinting.org) and CUPS (Common Unix Printing System).

On Linuxprinting.org I found this foomatic (recommended) foo2zjs printer
driver along with instructions on how to compile and install the driver.
The strange fact is that I CAN print a PGS document if I "print" (save) it
to a Postscript file, open it with either Konqueror or GV (Ghostscript
viewer) and print the postscript file from them. Both Konqueror and GV
do also display the document correctly (and print it correctly): it's just
Pagestream that does not print it correctly: a scan of the produced
printout was sent to Deron for evaluation. BTW, GV uses lpr to print,
Konqueror uses the standard printer method selected in the printer
preferences (Control Center --> Peripherals --> Printers).

The printer has 2MB of memory.

Hello Tim, Pagestream Support,

after further investigations, I found what the problem was with my bad
printouts on my HP LJ 1020: as stated in a comment found on
Linuxprinting.org in the section dedicated to drivers for the HP LJ 1020,
the problem were simply in one of the settings for my newly created printer
in Control Center --> Peripherals -- > Printers. According to the note,
once the printer is created, the user MUST set the paper size to "A4" and
not "letter" (the default) which is given to each newly created printer.
Unbelievable! It works when paper size is A4 while the printout is
unreadable with paper size="letter".

Anyway, I'm happy that now I can print directly from Pagestream instead of
having to resort to printing to a postscript file and then print from GV or
Konqueror.

I have also donwloaded (and used) the latest firmware for my HP LJ 1020.

Best regards.

Excellent! I'm glad it is working for you.
