Note, to run BME requires the same environment as PgS. I copied the script to
Run-BME and changed the executable therein. Although on linux there is the
GIMP I suppose it makes sense to bundle a basic graphics editor (especially
considering it already exists).

And, assuming it is in your path or you provide a full path, you can use it
with the send to editor script (no wrapper needed as it inherits PgS's
environment). If BME is considered stock not beta then perhaps the
distributed one should do so? PgS's path isn't added to the path for Python
but I think I remember a work around (maybe).

It is on the path. I accidentally specified 'bme' without the path and 'BME'
with the full path. Stupid, stupid.

However, many of my graphics are PNG for which there is no save module. That
reduces the utility of BME considerably, but to test things out I converted
one graphic to ILBM and tried the send to editor with it. On saving I got an
error:

SL_DoModule buffer overflow 20

so it looks like BME is not fully functional in any case.
