SuSE10.2 64 bit
I don't use pagestream much but run it occasionally just to make
sure it is working.

I know that it ran fine a week or so ago (maybe as recently as
yesterday or the day before) but I tried it today and got a
requester saying that L??????????.rsc is missing

When I run Pagestream from a term window the following output was
shown

(PageStream5:16412): Pango-WARNING **: Invalid UTF-8 string passed
to pango_layout_set_text().

SuSE has just done alot of gnome upgrades that I took advantage of
but I think I may have even run pagestream after those upgrades.

Has anyone else noted these problems?

How do I get PageStream running again?
Thanks
See ya

That is normal

I would extract from the archive again and make sure to launch using the
provided script. That *should* work and if it doesn't suggests that maybe an
update did affect PgS.

I don't use SuSE any more so I don't have any direct experience to relate to
that.

I dont have this problem never. Maybe filesystem crash had destroyed
this file. Try to unpack archive with PageStream again.

Yhat was one of the first things I tried, I also tried downgrading
pango. Neither of these had any effect. I suspect there is some
change in gnome 2.18 or suse's version of it.

The more I think about it I'm sure I've run across this error
before, I'm curious where Pagestream is getting this "Invalid UTF
string" from.

Thanks for the replies so far

Could be. I'm running 64-bit, but with Kubuntu. As the 32-bit chroot
environment is only used for PgS I don't bother with keeping it updated.

I'm pretty sure it is a completely internal error caused by how it pushes data
to requesters and the like. Because the text displays I suspect it is an
insignificant error -- but if it were caused by deprecated functionality that
was finally removed that could do it to.

You say you backed Pango down, did you back down the 32-bit versions? (I
assume you did, just checking).

I'm hoping for a 64-bit compile sometime this year (that also supports the
current Python). That would make things easier to deal with.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you.

Suse provides a 32bit compatability rpm in the 64 bit repository,
I've never needed the regular 32 bit pango in the past.

When I tried to go to the 32 bit version smart (my package manager)
wanted to remove 846 other rpms, not really what I wanted to deal
with.

For now I am pretty sure that it is a compatability issue w/ the
newest version of gnome but I don't have the ability to
troubleshoot right now, (just installed sabayon 3.4 and am trying
to set it up). I assume that the problem lies

I'll investigate more in a couple of days.

OK I finally found out where the error was coming from.

Background, I'm running opensuse10.2 64bit smp. I did select to
install many 32 bit compatability libs but do not chroot anything,
and have never needed to in order to run pagestream.

I upgraded almost all of the gnome and gtk pkgs to version 2.18...
using smart.

One series of pkgs that I upgraded (when I did a full gnome upgrade
to 2.1Cool was the gnome-vfs2, gnome-vfs2-32bit, gnome-vfs2-devel
rpm's. Apparantly Pagestream (as well as vmware) does not play well
with the 2.18 versions of these packages.

When I downgraded to the 2.16... versions (from the opensuse dist
site) of these rpms pagestream (and vmware) functioned properly
again.

Thanks for the help earlier.

Stay tuned for my next exciting question about ugly theme and
