want to make tickets for candidate find raiser & put a very opaque background
pix of him so people can read the print on top.

Can I do it in Linux PgS 5.0.4.3 pro or use gimp? I've done it on friend's
windoz with Page Maker & think I remember doing it on my old Amiga.

Easy to do, select the graphic, right click on it, in the popup menu at the bottom is Mask. in the sub-popup select mask options, and the type of mask, in your case opacity, select the amount and click ok.
then back to this menu again, except select Generate Mask. Smile

When I first got your answer I made some great tickets..no problem...that was
in June...I now am making some new tickets & no matter what I try the graphic
prints full color, though it looks perfect on the screen..the only difference
is this is a logo graphic not a photo, it's a.png or .jpeg (I used both to
test). Any thoughts??

You can't print blended/alpha masked objects to a PostScript device.
Best bet is to lighten the photo using another App before hand, or use
the FX -> button which will actually change the bitmap and doesn't have
an undo (ouch, missed that one...)

Thanks...I got it done..But I swear I did do it easily last time using the
Mask method, but I have mostly used .pdf to print because I usually need a 13
X 17 poster on my epson 3000 when I use PgS.

I love PgS...still a little buggie on Linux, but so much easier to put color
pictures in a letter & have it where I put...I always used it on the Amiga to
write letters so I never learned how to use a wordpressor & yes I know the
difference between the 2 programs.
