High everyone. Deron finally managed to get the latest Windows version
(pgs406.zip) uploaded. I haven't had a chance to install it yet, but I
think Deron has more confidence in it than previous versions. He's removed
the beta designation from it, and the version numbers are in sync with the
Amiga and Mac versions.

I'm getting ready to burn a CD now to carry it from my Amiga to PC.

Dumb question for Deron:

Are you uploading via phone lines? It took a long time for you to get it
actually uploaded successfully.

Hello All,

Downloaded the latest Windows beta ... unzipped fine with WinZip ...
however, trying to install the software results in an "Illegal Operation"
about 9% into the installation ... checking the error message shows a
"fault" in INSO432 causing an error in the module KERNEL32.DLL, or something
similar ... it then stops the installation process ... as requested, I had
all other software shut down while installing ... has anyone else had a
similar problem or suggestions as to how to work around this?

Thanks,

Wayne.

Hello All,

Having given up trying to use the "SetUp" program to install PageStream into
the Program Files directory, I decided to try launching PS from the place I
unzipped the download to (Desktop). My computer is brand new, and hasn't
had a previous beta on it ... on first attempt it asked me to provide my
password and reg details, and promptly closed thereafter ... subsequent
attempts have resulted in a PS "intro" screen flashing very briefly on the
monitor, and then a PageStream "Dos" type window coming up with the
following ...

error: could not create display handle.

Any ideas?

Regards,

Wayne.

Yes, I am. Better than cellular Smile No other choices in this area! Sadly,
the only times I can get to a phone is during peak internet usage around
here. I'm luck to get connected, much less stay online long enough to
upload a large file. If I can connect during offpeak I get about a 10x
improvement in upload times Smile

Of well. I hope to get real phone lines RSN.

Try coping the contents of the PageStream directory that you get when you
unzip to:

c:\program files\pagestream\

This is the default "happy home" of PageStream. You should be able to run
the PageStream4.exe file from there as is without a shortcut etc.

Deron, I am running Windows 98 Second Edition ... reinstalling the
KERNEL32.DLL fixed the above problem, and I was able to install PageStream
without incident after that. So, I suspect my KERNEL32.DLL file was
corrupted when I initially tried to install PS.

Deron, I double-checked, and PageStream IS installed to your default
location and directory ... it still refuses to do anything other than what I
described above. Dave suggested it may be a problem with my BIOS settings,
though I haven't been able to see any obviously wrong in there. Further, I
have installing numerous other programs without any incident, so I am hoping
it is a "bug" in the PageStream beta which is only manifesting itself on my
machine at present ... unless you are able to suggest what specific settings
in the BIOS I should be taking a very close look at? As I said earlier, to
my untrained novice eyes, everything seems fine in the BIOS.

My windoze system: PII 233 MMX, 64M RAM, Win 98 (4.10.199Cool with some SE
updates printing to an ancient but working HP DJ600.
A few snips from recent mail and some garbage from me:

something

No, it installed fine. excellently in fact.

>> * I would like to see that the view menu (under the windows menu)

>Something I've pondered over many times. What do people think?
Unfortunately, multiple views, and hiding/revealing, don't fit into the
>Windows "standard". Do we drop those features on Windows, ignore the
standard for the most part and do it like PageStream on the other
>platforms, or somewhere inbetween (have a Window menu, but add a few
non-standard options).
IMHO the windows standard sucks. Other programs, except MS (obviously),
ignore it or parts of it. Go with "standard" Pagestream as per other
platforms. That'll make our cross-platform work easier. It might not
sell it to new Windows users immediately, but maybe that's not the
object.

>>* Under the Drawing tab, in preferences, when choosing "On Double
Click: Beep" there's a small bug with the "Do:" list below.
>I just played with this and it seems to work fine. What happens for
you? Can others reproduce a problem with the requester?
Works fine for me.
Except that once again coming out of Preferences I get an "illegal
operation" (I make no comment) - the invalid page fault in module
MSVCRT.DLL - which appears with monotonous regularity for me.
What's not working? Just the little things like icons, keyboard
shortcuts, I think, to sort now. And the refresh problems in some
windows:

>>But in my display, there is a continual buildup of broken little
pieces of jetsam and flotsam, primarily from broken little pieces of
toolbars left on the screen, until
nothing can be read,
This is how it is for me, most of the time. Yuck, especially the
scroolbars. But i thought i read that this has been/is being done.

And the printing... It's a real wierd bug, as Deron says. I can print
frameless text. Sometimes. Sometimes not. Sometimes if it's big (98pt+).
Sometimes not. Text boxes no. Graphics no. Bezier curves no. Grids no.
Doughnuts no (sorry, I made that up). And yet, running Pagestream 3.1 on
the ancient Amiga 1260 onto the PC screen via a siamese, I can do
anything - print, fly, run 100m. Sorry, I've had a bad day at work. Back
to the plot...
Yes, as someone else said about the Amiga version, export to Acrobat
then print is mostly fine. Some font substitution stuff - but that's
mainly on old Amiga docs and is probably my laziness... I've not tried
enough graphics, especially grouped stuff, exported as .pdf yet. But I
was jumping around the room here when i got a print of a Pagestream doc
sent to Acrobat!

I suppose I should say that, as one of the people who was heavily
flaming Deron a year (or was it 18 months?) ago, I'm finally starting to
believe... Maybe before long, we'll have a fully-working Windump
version.

Hello All,

I decided it might be worth a go to install Beta 10 of PageStream, to see if
that would fire up on this computer. I reset the clock back to January, to
get around the 1 month Beta Installer Problem, and it loaded fine ... well,
it loaded to an directory in CRazzrogramFiles called "PageStream4.0". So, I
ended up with 2 copies of PageStream on here ... the newest version in
C:/ProgramFiles/PageStream, and one in C:/ProgramFiles/PageStream4.0 ... the
older beta displayed the same problems as the new one for me ... though, I
am not sure if that is because both versions are calling on the same "common
libraries" ... I had expected the older beta to install over the top of the
new one actually, and was surprised to find I had ended with 2 different
copies installed.

So, after trying the old beta to see if it would work, I decided to
uninstall it again ... as that beta didn't have the "Uninstall" icon, I went
into Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs ... to cut a long story short, it
uninstalled the older PageStream, but "deleted" the list of programs I can
uninstall in the Add/Remove Programs window ... can anyone suggest how to
get this back, or is it gone for good? Has anyone had the same problem with
Beta 10?

Wayne.

Deron,

I downloaded r7 this morning. It's looking and feeling very solid now! It's
good to have the toolbar buttons working and the keyboard shortcuts (cut &
paste, etc.).

I imported a doc created in Amiga 3.2 and it imported with no problems. The
program prints fine to my HP 4P with Postscript. (However I just tried
printing to the HP 4P non-postscript driver and I get nothing but a blank
page.) There is however still a problem with landscape printing.

With Page Setup set to landscape and orientation in print setup set to
portrait the doc prints 'fine' except that each character is rotated 90
degrees to the right. The graphics mostly printed okay, but with a little
distortion.

I changed orientation in print setup to landscape, and now the text prints
correctly and things are still laid out landscape on the page, but the whole
page is offset from where it should be - about 1" down and 3/8" over from
the left, and about 1" is cut off on the right side of the page. I suppose
this is related to the rotated text problem.

One thing is happening that I hadn't noticed before - the debug window
frequently pops to the front - when the program is opened and you open a new
doc, after printing, and a few other times. It generally adds a line of
text - 'toolbar command?' to the window each time it pops up. Umm, sometimes
other things that I have open in the background (like this message as I was
working on it) would pop to the front also, so it isn't just the debug
window. It's like I've clicked on another window to bring it to the front
and send PageStream to the back, except that I *haven't* clicked on another
window.

Window redraw is better I think but still needs some work. I had 3 docs open
at once and after moving between them they got a little confused! Also,
sometimes after the debug window popped to the front and I click somewhere
on the Pagestream window to bring it back to the front, the ruler bars in
the doc window would not rewrite properly - they would still show the debug
window.

One thing that seems to consistently cause a crash is saving to PDF. If I
create a brand new doc and save as pdf it works. But if I load in a doc
created in an earlier version of Pagestream - whether it be Amiga or
Windows - it crashes when I click the save button.

I just discovered the option to save to pdf by printing to the Acrobat
PDFWriter. This works without crashing, although it is subject to the same
landscape problems as printing in landscape. One problem I noticed - I
included a color photograph in a test document. Even though I selected Color
as the method on the print requestor, the graphic was saved as B&W - not
greyscale or color. Selecting greyscale instead of color produces the same
results. 'Save as PDF' with the method set to Color *did* save the graphic
in color correctly in the pdf file.

I have been unable to import any jpeg graphics - 'file format is
unrecognized."

Thanks for the great work Deron! You're really making progress.

Judy,
with regard to your monochrome graphics from PDF writer, I seem to recall
that this is a setting in acrobat3 as I had the same problem once when
trying to convert a document from pagis pro to PDF using the PDF writer. I
can't recall exactly where the setting is but I think it's in there
somewhere.

regards

Mark

Mark,

I didn't see any setting in Acrobat 3 that would effect this. I checked all
the settings in the Acrobat PDFWriter and didn't see any there either. I
just tried it again - 'printing' to the PDFWriter produces monochrome, but
using the Save as PDF option from the File menu produces color.

Umm, I've been assuming that the PDFWriter driver came with Pagestream, but
it is in my Printers folder and is from Adobe - must have come with Acrobat
3 and I just never noticed it before. The only setting I can find in the
driver having to do with color had to do with selecting a color profile for
a specific printer. I tried one - at random - and it made no difference to
the output. So the problem may well be there somewhere, and not in
Pagestream at all.

I loaded the last newsletter from the Macintosh and was able to create a
PDF file from it without a crash. Could you supply a small document that
definatly crashes on your machine? Then I can determine if my version just
doesn't crash, or if I just have the right documents.

Thanks in advance. Just email it to support@softlogik.com!
