It's been a while since I played around with the beta, so I thought I
would try it out some more. Some may be repeats - it's been months.

1. General robustness - medium
Seems to be better than previous 4.1.6 betas but still crashes a
lot when I am doing simple stuff. For instance, I placed a JPG on the
page, cropped it and clicked on it with the text tool, typed some text
over the picture and then tried to manipulate it. It crashed twice in
a row. Now that I have gone back and tried to get it to fail for the
third time I am not finding the sequence of events that caused it.
Sorry. I will try to characterize this one better, if it is just a
single bug. Anyway, it crashed several times when I was changing fonts.

2. Old bugs from 4.1.5.8
STYLE BUG - I have been going crazy with styles on 4.1.5.8 lately.
I make a three page doc, put linked text frames on the three pages,
and start typing paragraphs. I use a basic Body Text style (Times New
Roman, 12pt) for the whole thing, then use a special style on
individual words (based on Body Text except bolded and Courier New
font). Every time I pick and put a block of text (whether it contains
either of the above styles only or both of them) all text in the
document suddenly switches to a smaller Arial font regardless of what
it had previously been. If I select it with the mouse it is shown as
"Body Text+". Clicking on "Body Text+" in the style requestor
sometimes fixes the problem, sometimes it doesn't. I loaded the
document I was working on into 4.1.6.33 and tried picking and putting
- the problem was still there. [SAME]
Postscript printing landscape docs in 4.1.5.8 did not work very
well. Most pages were messed up if they included text and graphics.
Various elements would be rotated at weird multiples of 90 degrees
from where they should be. Now it appears that the whole page is
rotated, but the paper is not, so that sides of the page are cut off.
[WORSE] Also, now many fonts seem to be missing (replaced by Courier)
in the printout [WORSE]
Arrows: In 4.1.5.8 arrowheads went beyond the line end. in
4.1.6.33 that is fixed! [BETTER]

3: New bugs
The 4.1.6.33 beta still does not show all my fonts. I know that I
wrote about that before so I will not belabor it here. Deron - was my
registry info useful on that or should I supply any other data?

4: Unfinished features in 4.1.5.8
PDF export had a few problems:
(a) fonts not embedded
(b) applied styles not exported
(c) gradients not exported
(d) crops on pictures not exported
In 4.1.6.33 this is the status of these:
(a) (have to check this one later -
requires using a computer missing
one of the fonts that I use)
(b) Some applied styles are now exported [BETTER]
(c) Gradients still not exported [SAME]
(d) Crops on pictures still not exported.

5: Other comments:
Requestors look ever cleaner and are more functional.
Still easy to crash when playing with tables, just like 4.1.5.8

That's all for now. Back to 4.1.5.8 until the next beta comes along.
Will that be soon? I have a 24 page calendar that has every page in
landscape (wider than taller on the screen, printed in landscape on
the printer). I can only print it on my deskjet. If I try to export
in PDF it loses fonts, styles, crops and gradient fills. If I try to
print as a generic poststript printer, save to file, and convert to
pdf using another utility, I get the correct fonts (in 4.1.5.8, not
4.1.6.33), cropped bitmaps and gradient fills but objects move around
in a weird way and mess up the page worse. I would much rather
distribute the calendar as PDF or print a final on a laser printer,
but it is still not possible. Any information I can provide on this,
I would be willing to provide!

Steve,

How were you changing fonts? From the menu, the popup in the edit palette,
or the font selector (from edit or menu?)

It worked great for me just now. Did you choose landscape in print setup
(you shouldn't, but it is a common mistake). What happens if you print to a
bitmap (again, in print setup choose letter size paper and portrait not
landscape)

Do they display on screen? What kind of fonts are they (TT or Type 1?)

Actually, forgotten. I'll dig it back out.

I want to apologize for mentioning this. As a SW developer myself, I
know how useless the "it doesn't work" bug reports are. After the
first three failures I started the entry in the report, but when I
tried to duplicate it in a methodical way, I could not get it to fail.
Sorry. I'll keep trying. Sad

Don't know how to print to bitmap. I print to my Deskjet
(everything seems pretty much okay there) or to postscript
using an HP Laserjet driver with 4.1.5.8, redirecting to
a file (I don't have a PS printer at home and I am laid off
until I start my new job next week) and converting to PS
using ps2pdf. With the Beta 33 I print to postscript using
the generic Adobe driver that came with the program and
again convert to pdf. I believe that the ps2pdf is a very
good converter - I know with the weird rotations I got from
4.1.5.8 it duplicated the printouts I got on my PS printer
at work exactly.

I have not been setting the printer driver to landscape at all.
The only thing that is landscape is the setting in the Master
Page. It works great in the deskjet, but there had been some
sort of postscript printing problem for at least a while with
version 4. I just never noticed it since I didn't print in
postscript ever until I started trying to get around the PDF
export font problem. Even then I did not notice it since it
only affected printouts with landscape master pages.

I have some exported examples if you want. I have about 300-400K
of Gif files or the (huge) postscript files or a couple megs of
PDF files in several categories:
1: screen grab to show the sample page
2: PDF exports from 4.1.5.8 and from 4.1.6.33 (or gif of acrobat
screen)
3: PDF derived from PS print. 4 files, the two versions with
landscape printing turned on and off in the printer driver (I was
curious what effect it would have) - again, smaller gif screen grabs
are available.

Some TT that display on screen (OnStage for instance) were replaced by
courier in the PS-converted-to-PDF.
No Postscript font seems to work on the screen at all with PS4.1.6.33.
They display on the screen with 4.1.5.8 but don't seem to be spaced
correctly. They work fine with other windows apps (including
OpenOffice) Here's the weird thing - I only see the .PFM files in the
c:\windows\Fonts directory from the explorer, even with hidden files
shown. This is all under XP Professional, by the way.

Deron, I think you did get that one. You did send me a new
SoftLogikDispLib.
And that worked for me!!
