You're right, it all has to do with the PDF export functionality of the
different versions of PS. I downloaded the latest beta version
(5.0.4.46) and it had no trouble handling my "shadowed" titles
perfectly. (5.0.4.34 does a good job too). Just to be clear, the way I
do these titles is to make them in black, then duplicate and overlay
them in another color, so there is no variation in the font, both layers
are identical except for color.

As for the installation of new fonts, thanks for the tip, it solved my
problem there. What I was doing wrong was clicking on the "Update"
button in the File > System Prefs > Fonts dialogue box without _first
highlighting_ the path.

Now everything is 'hunky dory'. Thanks for your speedy answers.
