Well, I don't know for sure how the originals were created, but I have reproduced exact matches using Photoshop. The pictures are first created in 24bit RGB so you get antialiasing, then scaled down to palette so they can be saved as gifs. I don't remember the exact font at this time. I'll try it myself (I'll make the titles for Character Set or something).
