I what to verify that you are not surprised that the external files are
not found automatically. Tim Doty has asked for some pretty nice
improvements in the way PageStream hunts down missing external files but
I want to verify that it at least works as well as it does on other
platforms. So any graphic that was kept in the

Ok, but you get to test it. All the open/append document, import text,
place graphic code did not previously expect to be aborted at this
point. If I missed something strange things can happen! Not to mention
unfreed memory.

You can simply add a Redraw Window script button to the toolbar if you want.

Other than editing text, everything _should_ leave the display in
properly shape AFAIR. Please report these.

Ok, this one I don't understand. I use standard apple fonts/controls,
and use the Apple Human Interface Guidelines to size/space controls. For
example, OK/Cancel buttons are 58 pixels wide and 12 pixels between. My
layout code is very flexible and was written to be font/language
sensitive but the Apple guidelines don't appear to accommodate different
fonts.

So, are PageStream's controls coming up smaller than say an Apple
application? Or is this a common problem you would like to see a
(non-standard) solution to? (which I can do since all the other
platforms deal with it).

As far as the toolbar, that one may be a different issue. Apple provides
two different toolbar looks (actually, I think there are more than
that), but as I recall PageStream's buttons are the way it should be.
You can right click on the toolbar and set them smaller (which is a
standard apple dialog).

If you can provide some screen shots of PageStream dialog vs another
Apple application that would help me see if the problem is general or
specific to PageStream.

Works ok here, and I don't think I could do that if I wanted. It is a
standard Apple dialog. I know that the default location doesn't always
work (say you set the folder path in PageStream to default to a
location, but when you open a dialog it doesn't start there) but that is
a different issue altogether.

I won't make it a user option, but I'll leave off the creator type and
just set the file type. This is one of those Apple transition things.
They want support for old style creator/file types and file extensions.
The later is the "new" way. Which I don't understand why if you have
.pdf set to Preview, why creator type would override that if Apple says
that is "old" way. Shrug.

The list of little glitches will grow faster than I can fix them for a
while. Please send in the feedback as you can and I'll do my best to get
them done. I will try and make releases every few days as long as the
feedback is coming in, but everyone can choose to download or not as
they see fit.

Hi, Deron...

I tried your suggestion, selecting either small or large icons in the
customize Tool Bar dialog... but the Icons don't seem to change. The
font gets condensed a bit and the length of the tool set shortens by
about an inch. Here are two snapshots that show Apple's Pages Tool
Bar on top of Pagestream's. I note that the entire top bar gets about
two or three pixels wider when Large is selected but the icon doesn't
get bigger.

The first is set with both programs icons in Small size

This next pic is both programs icons set on Large size

Note that Pages Icons are at least 50% larger than they were but
Pagestream's just spread out farther and remained the same size. i
don't know what size monitor you use or the resolution, but think
about using these tiny icons in a 1680 X 1050 mode... they are itty
bitty. They PS icons are about 3/32" high, if that.

The following full screen snapshot may help you understand my
problem... and it can only be worse on a 24" iMac with its 1920 X 1200
screen. Remember my screen is 20" diagonal.

I hope this all helps you make Pagestream the best DTP on the Mac...
Thanks again for your efforts.

As before, this is on a 1.6GHz PPC G5 Tower with 1.5GB RAM and a 20"
Cinema Display.

Looks as if we can't send pictures through the groups...

Where can I upload the pics, Deron?

Deron... More bug reports...

1> Tool Bar Icons and labels - Actual size choice on my 1680 x 1050
display is only 75% of actual size. I need to make a custom size of
137% to achieve actual 1 to 1 parity. We need to have again the
ability to calibrate our screens to actual size.

2> File and Printing crashes - I loaded the offending file that
crashed on being saved as a PDF yesterday. It crashed PS on loading
but reloading worked and it saved to PDF just fine today. Both loads
were from "Open Recent/" Don't know what caused the crash yesterday.
This is the file that gave me the SBBOD when I tried to print... but
today It also printed properly from PS using the built in print
routines.

3> The Magnify pointer is hosed on both + and - The split is exactly
in half with the left half appearing on the right and vice versa.
Eyedropper Pointer is also hosed in the same way...

DRAWING:

4> Constraining objects to standard shapes - My recollection is that
holding shift is supposed to constrain drawing a circle to an exact
circle regardless of when you press the shift key... doesn't work the
same. Same thing on resize... shouldn't it maintain the aspect ratio
when the shift key is held down and the move handles are moved?
Apparently the shift key must be held down FIRST before the click to
start the drawing for the constrain to circle or square works.
Pressing shift before or after trying a resize of an existing object
has no effect unless the handle grabbed is a corner handle then if the
shift key is pressed first, it works. Why can't it revert to constrain
regardless of WHEN the shift key is pressed like before? It is awkward
to have to press it first.

5> Divide by Zero... OBJECT EDIT PALETTE - Trying to divide by zero in
the editing palette gives interesting results... undo will undo the
results though. AND it doesn't crash the app. 2.8" divided by zero in
the width edit box gives the result of -1174.2853" and the object
vanishes. Command Z and the object returns and the box is again 2.8"
Dividing ANY number by zero results in -1174.2853, CMD-Z works to
return to the correct value. Dividing by zero in the position edit box
results in a POSITIVE 1174.2853 figure and the object either becomes
extremely elongated (still drawn on the screen) or it disappears and
leaves two handles.. undo returns to proper appearance and number.
Moving the handles seems to do something and multiple moves can still
be undone back to the original. Dividing by zero on a angle edit box
results in -83.648º and changes the object. CMD-Z returns to original.
Should not be allowed. But it at least does not crash. and is
recoverable. Dividing by zero in the percentage size edit results in
163.8375" in the size box... and the object gets very long to the
right or tall down. Divide by Zero in Borders dialog box... dialog
box disappears, border disappears... undo doesn't but reselecting F/X
does and allows you to reset the edit box.

6> Edit Palette field outlines disappear when objects are moved. The
numbers stay but the field boxes go away. they return when the move is
finished. When in pointer mode, and no object is selected, no boxes
contain the position data. it just appears to the right of the X or Y.

7> Freehand Tool - Drawing with freehand tool is blind... you cannot
see the line being drawn until you stop drawing and release the mouse
button. Not too useful.

8> Script to curve text results in the curved text and the line it
follows reduced in size to about 1/8 original line size. IIRC this is
the way it worked before. Font size does not effect reduction. can be
resized though. Undo results in the disappearance of both text and
line... handles for box remain. Setting the stroke on in Line and
Stroke results in a box with a perimeter... but no drawn line.
Converting the selected box to path results in the text being restored
as an outline... interesting.. the text has been converted to the
path. understandable I guess. Trying to delete the complex path
results in the SBBOD. I'm still waiting to see if it will eventually
delete. Force Quit Application says Pagestream is not responding.
Went to see the plumbing.... had a nice visit... SBBOD still spinning.

9> Table Tool seems to be lacking formating info in edit palette...
cannot set number of cells (am I forgetting how to do this? Probably).

10> Rotating Text... this one is bad... the rotating text is no longer
smooth. It is jerky and the letters rotate partially on their own and
then catch up... but if you stop at some intervening point, they stay
individually rotated, skewed or tilted.. The text in this picture is
skewed 230º but as you can see the letters no longer share a base line
or top line. not good.

The text in this picture are merely rotated..

The text in this picture should be tilted 10º to the left... it isn''t
- note the handles.

This is the same text tilted back to 0º (it is not italics) and it has
not returned to upright.

(Pictures will have to be sent separately. Dang... but they are BAD!
this is actually unpredictable at what degree they will appear properly.

Hi Andrew,

I didn't get your pictures, but I see now the problem is that PageStream
only has 16x16 icons, and it needs 32x32 icons also for the toolbar.
That is not something I can do quickly (Ask Tim Doty, I just told him
how much I hate drawing icons!) but I can create some that are just a
doubling of the existing icons for now.

However, if you can see other problems in the size of controls/dialogs I
need to see them still! This list is set up to not allow attachments but
perhaps you can either send those files to me at support@pagestream.org
or maybe we should allow attachments (or HTML text at least) on this
list? What does everyone think?

Ok. I forgot about that code. System calls for returning the dpi were
not working for me and I took them out. I got it figured out and put
back in. You can also edit the dpi settings in your pref file by adding
the line

SCREENDPI xdpi ydpi

Where xdpi and ydpi are the numerical values (72 72 are the defaults).
This pref item will override whatever the system reports. A PageStream
dialog exists on some platforms that lets you set that value plus a few
other screen items. If the system can't reliably return the dpi then
I'll enable it for the Mac version. Once that is determined, I will be
moving the font (and screen) prefs to the PageStream menu under the
Preferences or putting it in Preferences.

Well, I'm surprised Open Recent works considering the other bug that was
reported (and now fixed)! Hopefully some of this will be fixed in the
next release (probably not the random Save as PDF problems). Just keep
reporting when it crashes and if you can do anything reproduceable let
me know that also.

If that is just with PPC, then it should be fixed in the next release.

The edit palette changes to simply text display instead of string
controls when the item is not editable. I don't see this as a bug but
the proper indication to the user (and has been this way since
PageStream 3.0 had an edit palette) Obviously you disagree. What do
others think?

Ok. Thanks. Fixed for next release.

Not many bugs are, though a few have come up from time to time.

You are right, it is the way it has worked in a long time. I'll put it
on my list, but I'm not going to tackle that until I get the program
functionality up a little higher.

Yes, this is a standing bug. The rendering code seems to have a rounding
problem. It is actually documented in the bug list as font backend might
need replacing or at least tweaking. I hope I can simply find the
problem and fix it instead of replace it.

Two days ago I opened old documents, created new documents (simple,
trivial, test-if-it-works kind of stuff).

Today every effort to open an old document causes Pagestream to crash.

Tried opening from the Open menu item, from the Open Recent menu item, from
Pagestream's own "New - Open - Prefs..." dialog, and from double-clicking
on the file.

I had moved all my documents from where they had lived under the OS 9
version of Pagestream, and in doing that, they lost their Pagestream-logo
icons. (They are now in ~/Documents/Pagestream/Documents/)

I just tried re-booting, with no improvement. Tried "New" and crashed also.

Nothing has been reported that would identify your problem. The screwed
up document name when loaded will make Open Recent not work right, but
it won't crash (the file just won't load).

Maybe something PageStream did corrupted the pagestream package (I've
never had this happen, and any crash has been cleared by simply
rerunning PageStream, but anything is possible). You might try
downloading again and try that. You can keep both packages installed and
even run md5 on the archive to make sure that nothing has changed. I
can't think of anything right now accept rebuilding localization files
which will write inside the package.

I had saved the downloaded .dmg file, so I opened that and overwrote the
existing Pagestream application with it.

I then tried looking (out of curiosity) inside the package contents, and,
having done that, double-clicked on the "5.0 Flyer.pgs" document.

It crashed.

I can send the crash report document from Apple's crash reporter if you
think that would help.
