Hello Deron,

I have now downloaded and installed PGS 5.0.4.12 pro and it mostly
seems to work as expected. there are, however, a number of problems:

1 The first is font substitution when opening old documents. Although
all the fonts used are still there on the computer, PGS does not seem
able to find them but makes some really weird suggestions for
substitute fonts.

I think that it is mainly due to the way Mac OS X stores and
implements fonts. However, with a bit of fiddling about, I think I
can live with the situation.

2. Secondly, and more seriously, I can't copy and paste text from my
usual word processor 'AppleWorks' . When I click on 'paste' or 'Apple-
V' nothing at all happens! I can paste the text from 'AppleWorks'
into 'TextEdit' or 'Melliel' and then I can copy or paste it into PGS
from there. The problem then is that things like double quotes are
not shown properly. 'Open double quotes' becomes '“' and close
double quotes becomes '”' and apostrophe becomes '’' and there
are others. Can anyone suggest how to overcome this.

3. I have also noticed a couple of glitches in the Edit Palette. In
'Text Width' the arrows are reversed. When you click on the 'Up'
arrow the text gets narrower and when you click on the 'Down' arrow
the text gets wider. 'Text Spacing' has a similar fault. 'Up'
decreases the spacing and 'Down' increases it. 'Point Size' and
'Leading' work OK.

I have a small project on hand at the moment and if I come across any
more glitches I will let you know.

At the moment Point 2 above is the most serious difficulty.

With many thanks,

Cheerio,

Terence Casey

G4 PPC Mac running OS X 10.4.11.

Thanks for the update. I will download a newer version when I get
back. I expect that by then there will have been several updates.

And yes, I should have mentioned that I am using a G4 PPC Mac running
OS X 10.4.11.

With many thanks,

Cheerio,

Terence Casey

Just flat broken! I had _just_ fixed a bug in the File Requester code to

the change was just the day before I released and I can make all kinds

Anyway, fixed for next release. I hope. I did check it over this time,

Sounds like two problems.

1. What fonts are not getting displayed in PageStream? Or are they just
named different?

If you put the lines "DEBUG SHOWFONTS" and "DEBUGFILE" (no quotes, each
to its own line at the end of the file) in your PageStream5.prefs file
(~/Library/Application%20Support/PageStream5/PageStream5.prefs) , then
run PageStream, it will create a debug file called AppDebug.txt in the
application bundle. You will find it by right clicking on the PageStream
app and choosing show bundle content. Then double click on Contents, and
then MacOS. If you can send that to me it will at least help identify
what could be wrong.

2. The font substutition list will simply suggest the default font
(which you set in your prefs) for any missing font unless you select a
replacement and choose "remember" for that replacement. What is it you
expected?

I don't want you to "live with it", I just want you to help me fix it by
explaining to me what the problem(s) are!

from the readme macintosh file (you did read it, right Wink

NOTES
-----
+ If something doesn't paste into PageStream, please run PageStream from
the Terminal and record the output it produces when you try and paste
something in the clipboard from another application that doesn't work.
PageStream will dump to the terminal what formats it does find in the
clipboard.

You won't have to do that if you follow the steps above. It will dump it
to the same AppDebug.txt file. I've updated the readme to give the
appdebug.txt instructions for capturing debugger output.

Hmm. Those characters pasted from TextEdit ok for me. Must be that the
common file format involved is Ascii, and it some kind of character set
issue (ascii has no decent way to describe the character set used to
generate the file. The OSX version of PageStream defaults to UTF-8 like
it does on Linux, but that doesn't mean another application won't write
some other. However, the sequences you are showing sure look like UTF-8
displayed a simple ascii).

If you save the file to disk from TextEdit, and reload it, does it still
display correctly in TextEdit? Does it still fail to Paste in PageStream
properly? If so, please send the file to me at support@pagestream.org.

What those arrows need is actually a different icon for left/right
instead of up/down but standard Mac doesn't provide that. For now I'll
simple reverse the meaning on those arrows. Thanks!

Hello Deron,

Well, the small project I started (a 2 page A4 newsletter with text
and photographs) turned out to be something of a disaster and I had
to go back to PGS 4 to complete it.

The main problems are:

1. Some of the substituted fonts will not print (HP LaserJet 1200) or
rather they are rendered as what looks like a form of Courier which
is presumably a default font. This applies mainly to fonts based on
'Arial' and the 'AvantGarde' family. I can get round this in various
ways but the second glitch appears to be insuperable, namely:

2. 'Placet Graphic' does not work. These are mainly photographs. Also
the usual workaround of opening the photo in another application,
e.g. 'GraphicConverter', and then copying and pasting into PGS does
not work either although the photo can be seen on the clipboard.

After this I had to give up!

A few minor niggles.

I miss the keyboard shortcuts for 'full page' and 'full width' and
also for text alignment, 'left', 'right' and 'justify' etc
Are we going to get these back?

Cheerio,

Terence Casey.

Hello Deron,

Thank you for your message of 14 Mar 2008, at 17:33.

Thanks for your quick and helpful response. Ah! You caught me out on
the readme file!

I will be busy on other things for the next few days but after that I
will go through the procedures you suggest.

First, you might consider Save as PDF. Lots of time has been put into
make it pretty robust. Would at least be interesting to me to hear how
it worked for your project.

Second, I am interested to know exactly which fonts didn't work for you
so I can make sure they work with the next release. Also, if you don't
mind I could email you the newest display library for PageStream and you
could see if I have addressed these issues yourself as I don't have the
AvantGarde font on this computer and not sure which format you might
have. Presuming it is an Adobe font, they have released all kinds of
varients (Type1 Mac, Type 1 Win, CFF, OpenType that I know of). The
Arial and a few variants on this computer worked for me to PS and PDF,
but it could be a bad combination of font/printer?? I do know that the
Apple Preview is very limited in what formats it support for some
reason. What works with Ghostscript rarely works with Apple Preview as
far as TrueType (t42) fonts and CFF (t2) fonts. In fact, I don't
remember if I ever saw one work with Preview...

Sounds like a file format that PageStream doesn't support? since Place
Graphics works here. You might try loading and saving back in a
different format in another application. Also, please send a file that
doesn't import to me at support@pagestream.org if you can.

I don't recall removing any shortcuts, but I don't see these listed in

Hello Deron,

When I last wrote I said that I had downloaded and installed PGS
5.0.4.13 beta and would try out some fonts and printing etc.

Well, I have, at last, got around to doing something but find that I
can't.

Whenever I open a new document or an old document it appears in a
window that goes off the bottom of the screen

I can't get to the bottom right-hand corner of the window to reduce
its size and I can't see the bottom of the document so I can't turn
the pages.
I have tried trashing and re-installing PGS but it is no different.

Has anyone else had this problem and is there a way around it?

With many thanks,

Cheerio,

Terence Casey

Hi Terence,

The problem is associated with Show Full Width. Avoid that in this version!

Until the next release (just a few days) you can delete the trashed line
from your PageStream5.prefs file. Just do a file search for that file,
and edit it in a text editor. Delete the line that starts with
SETWINDOWDEFAULTS. The next release will trap out of bounds window
locations and will fix the bad pref item, which is a good thing anyway
if you are switching between different screen resolutions.

Hello Everyone,

It really annoys me when the version I am using is declared out of
date when I am in the middle of a project.

This has happened to me twice recently – the latest yesterday. I was
working quite happily when, for some reason I had to close PGS.

When I tried to open it again I got the dreaded message "PGS?? is
now out of date please download the latest version etc".

I did this (PGS 5.0.4.30). But, of course, it doesn't work properly
straight away. Some of my preferences are remembered but not all.

Particularly 'Show palette' and 'Palette location'. Also toolbar was
blank. (But I admit that I learned a lot from going through the huge
range of tools to select the ones I needed).

To start with it would not remember window positions and opened
documents overlapping the toolbox and the edit palette.

Of course, I got it sorted out in the end but I really haven't got
time for all this fiddling about whilst working to a deadline.

SO MY QUESTION IS: Why can't the old version be kept active and leave
it to users to decide when they are ready to change over?

A few quibbles with the latest version – PGS 5.0.4.30

After I had finished my document and then tried to open it again PGS
prompted me for a Font Substitution – 'Helvetica Medium Italic – show
as Arial'. As far as I am aware I don't have 'Helvetica Medium
Italic' on my computer and certainly not in this document. So why am
I being asked about Font Substitution?

Window scrolling is a problem with several recent versions including
the latest.

Using the scroll bars is very hesitant and jerky.

Using the scroll arrows is much too slow and each click gives much
too small a movement. When I try to speed it up by making lots of
clicks the window keeps moving long after I have stopped clicking and
there is no way to stop it even if it goes past where I want to be.

Other programmes don't seem to suffer from this. Using the scroll
bars produces a smooth scrolling of the window and using the scroll
arrows the scrolling keeps up with the key clicks however fast go.

I only mention these things to be helpful in case others have been
affected by them.

PGS is still a great programme and I look forward to having a fully
working version. (At least as good as PGS 4.0.9 which I found
completely satisfactory.

With many thanks,

Cheerio,

Terence Casey

Not that is makes much difference, but it was the old version that
screwed up the prefs when it expired. The new version shouldn't do that.

Either it is a bug, or the document really does not use the font. Make
sure it is not used in your styles for example. That is a common place.

If it is a bug, is it reproducible?

Works ok here. Maybe complex document vs slower processor?

Sigh. Scroll arrow speed seems to be a personal issue. I keep getting
requests to slow it down, speed it up, etc. You all will have to fight
it out amongst yourselves and tell me the consensus Smile

It doesn't continue for me when I stop clicking.

Will the menu Layout->Reports show fonts defined in a style but not
actually applied to anything in the document? I was thinking perhaps
Terence could double-check there.

I often use Reports when I open a document and the font substitution
requestor displays fonts I thought I had not used in the document but are
really there. eg. a text frame without any text I thought I had deleted.

Hi,

You know, I'm not sure. It only shows colors used, not defined, for
example. The printing/pdf code will only include fonts used.

Just a second.... Nope, it only shows fonts used, not fonts defined in a
style that is not used.

Feature request perhaps? "Used Fonts" and "Unused Fonts" (or whatever) in
the Report?

You can't remember the plot of the Dr Who movie because it didn't have
one, just a lot of plot holes strung together.

It did have a lot of flashing lights, though.

Hello Everyone,

I am having with printing in colour from PGS 5.0.4.30.

Black and white printing using my HP 1200 LaserJet is no problem.
This is a PostScript printer.

But for printing in colour I always use my HP 1220C DeskJet printer
which is not a postscript printer.

When I try to use this, after a short delay, I get the message –
"The process 'pstopdf filter' stopped unexpectedly with status 1".

The same document prints in colour OK using the same printer but PGS
4.0.9.3.

I have also tried "System Printing " with PGS 5.0.4.30 but I still
get the same message.

Has anyone else experienced this?

With many thanks,

Cheerio,

Terence Casey

Hi Terence,

Try a couple things. First, create a document with one colored box and
try printing that. maybe the problem is with the font?

Try printing the document you are having troubles with to postscript
file to disk, and then open it with Apple Preview. If it opens, then the
problem is not in the postscript but in the converter. Doesn't mean I
don't need to work around it, but it helps.

I don't suppose a more detailed error log is available from pstopdf?

Hello Deron,

Thank you for your message of 17 Nov 2008, at 17:54.

Result of tests as follows:

Print red box on blank page – prints OK

Print original file to ps on disc. Try to open with Preview gives –
"PostScript conversion error. Couldn't convert the PostScript file to
PDF file".

Another test. Add text in various common fonts (Ariel, Helvetica &
Times) to the page with the red box. Fails to print with the original
message – "The process 'pstopdf filter' stopped unexpectedly with
status 1".

Try a blank page with text in any font – same result.

I can't find an error log for 'pstopdf'.

With many thanks,

Cheerio,

Terence

Ok,

take the simplest text case that fails with the most common font and
send the postscript file printed to disk to me at support@pagestream.org

It's possible something has been logged to the System Log. Start the
Console app in Applications/Utilities and look in "All Messages". Or
pstopdf may have its own message section.

Hello Steve,

Thank you for your message of 18 Nov 2008, at 01:21.

Following your advice I have found a Print Manager Crash Report in
the Console Application and sent it to Deron.

With many thanks for your suggestion,

Cheerio,

Hi, Terence. I have had this problem for a long time with my HP
Photosmart 8450. Currently on 5.0.4.30 Pro, I can't remember in which
version printing stopped working and gave that error message, but it
was several releases back. Doesn't matter what the document contains:
text only, text & images, b/w, color, etc. Sometimes Pagestream shuts
down in the attempt.

PowerPC G4, OS X 10.4.11, 1 GB RAM. HP printer and same Mac
system... Is this problem unique to this combination?

I have been too busy to report this bug (and a few others as well),
and as I have to e-mail jpegs for several of my projects anyway
(since PDFs don't translate properly from PgS either), I just live
with it.

Hello Marilynn,

Thank you for your message of 18 Nov 2008, at 09:26.

Yes, it sounds like the same problem although I have only noticed it
with PGS 5.0.4.30.

However, I am interested in the idea of using jpegs instead of PDFs.
How do you convert the PGS files to jpegs?

With many thanks,

Cheerio,

Terence Casey

That doesn't help get it fixed Smile

Can you take a minute and answer two things Marilynn? Can you print just
a box?

And what is the problem with the PDFs?

At this point, PDFs should be solid and the only known problems with
(system) printing seem related to specific font issues.

Hello Deron,

I have fiddled about a bit more but whatever I do I can't get PGS
5.0.4.31 Mac to print in colour (or black and white) to my HP 1220c
DeskJet printer.

As I said before it prints OK to my HP 1200 LaserJet printer (in
black and white). Also the documents I am trying to print, print OK
from PGS 4.0.9.

As far as I can tell something seems to be wrong with the way PGS
5.0.4.31 produces PDFs for the following reasons:

1. A PDF produced by PGS 5.0.4.31can be opened by Adobe Acrobat but
that is all. Any attempt to do any of the other things that Acrobat
is supposed to do with PDF files (eg reduce file size) results in an
error message.

2. If I use 'Print to ps file' on either the HP1220 LaserJet or the
Adobe 'PDF Printer' the resulting PostScript file is not recognised
either by Apple Preview or one of the online ps to pdf converters.

I can't devote any more time to this at the moment so for the colour
documents which need to be completed before Christmas I will revert
to PGS 4.0.9 (on Mac Classic) and wait for the next version of PGS 5
before trying any further colour documents with this version.

With many thanks as usual for all your help,

Cheerio,

Terence Casey

Thanks for trying. I'll play around here with color printing. If you can
send me a postscript file that doesn't work I will take a look at it
here. Same with the PDF, but in either case it would be helpful to know
if this also happens for all document, simple box document, different
fonts etc.
