Just a quick note that the recent 5.0.4.21 release has fixed my reported
problems, namely:

+ Fixed printing of text to PostScript in 5.0.4.19.
+ Attempt at arrowkey fix for problem some are having. Since I can't
reproduce the problem it is just a stab...

The second bugfix is quite impressive considering it was just a stab!
Very nice.

Thank for the update.

Hello Everyone,

PGS 5.0.4.21 Macintosh Beta may have solved some problems for Sjoerd
de Vries but I can't even get started with it!

1. The 'Toolbar' won't appear whatever I click in the 'Window Menu'.

2. Page Guides won't appear whatever colour I assign to them and when
I click 'Show Page Guides' in preferences.

3. This version fails to pick up my former 'Preferences' which all
the previous versions have done automatically (Including my
registration information). In fact I can't find my former preferences
anywhere.

So, at the moment, I can't even get started with creating a simple
document to try it out.

I tried to go back to PGS 5.0.4.20 but I got a message that it is
time-expired so I have no OS X version now!

With many thanks,

Cheerio,

Terence Casey

It should be in ~/Library/Application Support/PageStream5/ . Is the prefs
file no longer there?

Normally I would say try delete/rename the prefs file and start again,
I've found that has helped in the past. But if PgS is asking for your
registration info when started then I guess it's effectively starting
with a clean slate anyway.

The difference between me and Neil in our attitude to movie projects is
that he doesn't believe they're going to happen until he's sitting in
his seat eating popcorn, and I don't believe they're going to happen.

Hello Steve Bowman,

Thank you for your message of 17 Jul 2008, at 06:22.

I have found the preferences file where you said it would be and it
all seems OK including my registration details.

So I uninstalled PGS 5.21 and downloaded it again. This time it did
not ask me to re-register but it still does not seem to be
remembering most of my preferences.

Also the Toolbar does not appear. Clicking on 'Show Toolbar' in the
'Window Menu' changes it to 'Hide Toolbar' but nothing appeares on
the screen.

Also 'Page Guides' and 'Margin Guides' do not appear.

With many thanks,

Cheerio,

Terence Casey

Hello again Steve Bowman,

Thank you for your message of 17 Jul 2008, at 06:22.

Since my last message I have discovered that the 'Toolbar' does
appear but as a blank white band at the top of the page with nothing
in it.

This is again, I presume, the result of PGS not recognising my
preferences.

So I suppose that the answer to my problems is to get this version of
PGS to recognise my prerferences which, as I said, are present in the
'Application Support' folder. So how do I do that please?

With many thanks,

Cheerio,

Terence Casey

Can I suggest you either delete or rename the ~/Library/Application
Support/PageStream5/ folder and try PgS again from scratch and see if
this helps. You will have to re-enter your registration details in PgS
again.

I'm just wondering if a previous beta has written some odd data into the
prefs file. I've started with 5.0.4.21 from scratch and I have
encountered any problems with the toolbar nor preferences not being
recognized.

You do not need to "tell" PgS to look for your prefs file in Application
Support, it does this anyway.

Mine is ~/Library/Preferences/com.grasshopperllc.PageStream.plist

If you only delete the .plist file (if it is still there) you should not
have to re-register.

Just as an FYI, I had the exact same experiences as Terence regarding
the prefs.

When I started up 5.0.4.21, it used the prefs file to recognize my
registration and
that was it -- it failed to pick up any of my other standard prefs.

PgS started up as a "blank slate", showing just the new blank page
and nothing else. No toolbox,
no toolbar, no edit palette, no other palettes, nothing. Thought it
was quite odd, since I'd never had this happen before.

So I quit and restarted, and the same thing occurred. I figured that
Deron had changed something in the new beta that simply required us
to reinput our prefs.

So I just reopened the toolbox, toolbar, and reset all my palettes.
And eventhing has worked fine sine then.

I did think it was a bit strange that the toolbar was completely
empty, however -- not even the default entries were showing. Indeed
when I opened up the prefs and went to the "Toolbar" section, the
right-side "Tools" box was completely empty. Very strange. So I just
hit the "Reset to Defaults" button, it reloaded up the default set
just fine, and I made my changes from there.

The one annoyance I found was with the palettes. I know a few betas
back, Deron changed PgS so that it automatically saved all
window/palette positions, and therefore removed the "Save Window
Position" button. I wish that button was still there -- with this new
beta, it seems that the palette positions are only saved when you
quit the program.

If you open ("show") a palette and place it into a new position,
that position is not "remembered". If you close ("hide") the palette,
then reopen it, it would instead reappear in the upper left corner of
my screen, rather than where I had just repositioned it. VERY
annoying.

In the meantime, I just opened ALL the palettes (even the ones I
rarely use), positioned them where I wanted 'em, quit the program to
save the new positions, then restarted PgS. Now the palettes show up
where I want them, even if I close and reopen them. Not a great way
of doing this, but it works okay for now since PgS is still in beta
form.

However, if I want to reposition the palettes again, I'm back to
where I started, since PgS only "remembers" the new positions AFTER
you quit the program. So if you hide, then reshow a palette, it'll
pop back to its former position.

The readme.txt file states:
"Remembers palette positions automatically. removed snapshot from menu."

I'm not sure how PgS actually handles this, i.e. if it's 1) supposed
to automatically remembers them whenever you move them to a new
position, or 2) only do it after you quit the program.

If you could take a quick looksee at this Deron, I'd appreciate hate.
Hate to complain about this, but it's just not very workable from a
usability standpoint as it currently exists. If PgS is supposed to
internally remember the positions as in #1 above, then it's not
working. If it's supposed to only do it only after you quit PgS as in
#2 above, then it's somewhat of a hassle for those of us who
open/close/move palette frequently. In the interim, It might not be a
bad idea to put the "Remember Window Position" option back in, or
even leave it there as a "just in case" double redundancy option.

Anyway, as always, many thanks!

Oh, and before I forget, I wanted to thank you for fixing that Save
as PDF color issue I was having. This new update appears to have
totally resolved it (Woohoo!), and my PDFs now look exactly the same
color(s) as my original. You were also absolutely correct in your
assessment regarding CMYK vs RGB -- seems that some of my colors
(which I imported from some older PgS color files) were in CMYK space
instead of RGB. Quickly fixed those and PgS is now happy. Thanks
again!
