Greetings All

I have an iMac running OS X under version 10.6.3.

Just recently bought PageStream for OS X, version 5.0.5.1a.

First a caution!!!

I know very little about the iMac and OS X, so it is possible that the problems I list has something to do with the way in which the iMac is set up. However, I have NOT been messing around with the guts of OS X and so what I'm using is pretty close to "plain vanilla."

Unless specified to the contrary, any reference to «PageStream» alludes to version 5.0.5.1a running under OS X, version 10.6.3.

Missing Toolbar
+++++++++++++++
When PageSream opens, the Toolbar is *missing*. Toolbox is okay. All efforts of fiddling with
PageStream -> Preferences -> Toolbar
have failed.

Invisible Text Cursor
+++++++++++++++++++++
Suppose there is some text in a text frame. Black characters on a white background.

If one selects the A-shaped icon from the Toolbox, then the familiar movable icon appears which follows the movements of the mouse. I'll call this "the mouse cursor". If one places the mouse cursor within the text and clicks the mouse, then a visible "text cursor" should appear between two consecutive characters. *NO* such text cursor appears! It is as if the text cursor is coloured white. It is there, but it is invisible.

Vanishing Text
++++++++++++++
If I sweep the mouse cursor through a region of text, then one expects the region to be highlighted in some block of colour and the characters within the block should be visible. Not so! Highlighting a region of text simply replaces the text with whitespace, as if the colour of the characters was suddenely changed from black to white.

Same thing if the mouse cursor is double-clicked within a word or a paragraph --- the word or paragraph becomes blank (white).

Another click returns the text to a visible state.

It cannot be that "text cursor" is coloured white, because if I change the background colour of a text frame to yellow (say), then the text cursor remains invisible and highlighting produces whitespace again. If the text cursor were white it would 'appear' on a yellow background.

Copy & Paste
++++++++++++
It does not work! I'd swear that when I was using a demo version that it did work, but not today!

If I put something in the Clipboard with an iMac program (e.g., with TextEdit), then move to PageStream and perform a copy operation, then the Clipboard does not change. No difference, if I remain within PageStream.

Missing Handles
+++++++++++++++
Say you've got a text frame on a page and select the «object pointer»; i.e., the arrow icon from Toolbox. On clicking on the text frame, the eight 'handles' --- not sure of their proper name --- should appear so that the text frame can be resized. Though invisible, the 'corner' guys are easy to grab, but not the 'middle' ones. Surely these handles should be visible!

Well ..... there is more, but the above should do for now. Any suggestions appreciated.

Hi Don,

Please download 5.0.5.6 instead. OS X.6 "changed" several things with
regard to rendering inverted selection. Let me know if Toolbar or
Copy/Paste issues remain for you then.

Will do. Just visited the Grasshopper site and noted a whole flock of Mac implementations that I had not observed on my previous visit. Will report soon. Thanks.

Hi Deron,

Thanks for the quick reply. Here is what I've noticed about 5.0.5.6 so far --- essentially everything I complained about (re 5.0.5.1) works nicely. Smile

Toolbar is fine with version 5.0.5.6. When you open a document, say with 'New' from the 'Navigator', it is "glued" to the top of the page.

Text cursor is fine with 5.0.5.6. Also, when a text frame is created, the outline (boundary?)for the frame appears whereas with 5.0.5.1 it did not.

No vanishing text with 5.05.6. When highlighted, the highlighted text is white on a black background. Very good.

All the handles are visible with 5.0.5.6 and all expand/contract properly. Very good. Further, if you create a graphic object, then the handles for the object are clearly accessible, and work. Splendid!

I've done very little with 5.0.5.6 at this point, but it looks very promising. Smile)

I had some problems with 5.0.5.6 but they are OS X problems. I wanted to maintain the version 5.0.5.1 until I had checked out 5.0.5.6 and so I "saved" 5.0.5.6 to a directory other than ~/Applications but I'll clean that up shortly.

Deron, I haven't been helpful in reporting problems with the Macintosh Snow Leopard version, which were described in detail by others more diligent, but I want to thank you for making PageStream functional once again. When my old Mac died and I had no choice but to upgrade to a new Mac with a new operating system I had to set PageStream aside as it was simply inoperable. I've been working with other apps, mainly Pages and Keynote---both very nice, but neither has that perfect meld of text and image handling that DTP requires. (One more feature I'd like to see in PgS are adjustable soft-edged drop shadows.)

Unfortunately I can't tell you how a doc prints from PgS because my Mac is STILL having issues with my printer! HP has a lot of unhappy Mac customers over this...

Thanks again for your unflagging dedication to your "baby." I feel like I should send you some homemade cookies or something.

Hello Deron,

Like Marilynn DeSilva I recently bought a new !Mac running Mac OS 10.6.4 Snow Leopard.

Having noted comments on this list about PGS 5.5.1a and the advice to use PGS 5.0.5.6, I downloaded this version and paid $75 for it to obtain the activation key.

I was, therefore, somewhat dismayed to read in the introduction after installing that this is an 'evaluatiom' version which I can use for 15 days when it will then revert to a 'demo' version.

Can I do serious work with this version and what happens to my work when it reverts to 'demo' status?

Alternatively, how do I gonvert my copy into a permanent version?

With many thanks,

Cheerio,

Terence Casey

This is very easy Smile The Mac version is actually a picture of things to
come on other platforms. There is but one archive to download for each
release on a platform. If you don't activate it, then it runs as a
restricted demo version and/or a full function limited time demo. On the
Mac, the support exists to give the program 14 days to let you try all
the functions before it reverts to a limited demo. Other platforms may
only allow limited function demo.

If you enter the product key, it activates either the full standard or
pro version depending on the product key. If you later upgrade to the
pro version, you need only enter the new product key and the current
standard version will become the pro version.

When you first install PageStream on a clean machine, it will ask you to
either run it as a demo version or enter a product key. If you choose to
run as a demo, and/or later need to enter a new product key, then you
can do so in the About PageStream dialog.

The product key is located in your My Profile at pagestream.org. Simply
go to pagestream.org and sign in. Once you have done so, click on My
Profile and scroll down to the bottom of the page where your
registration details are displayed. You will see your 6 digit
registration number, the old 9 character activation, and the new 20
character product key (5 groups of 4 characters separated by a dash).
You need the first 2 for older versions of PageStream, and just the
later for the latest.

Just glad that it works for you!

Well, you can do soft edge drop shadows now with PageStream. The only
problem is that it won't reproduce in a PDF file (yet). You have the use
the shape fill function, and if you recall text shadows can be
completely configured on a case by case. Combine the two and viola! You
can set the offset, and slant, of the shadow and set the shadow fill to
shape (even transparent shape, but then it won't reproduce to PostScript
either where transparency is not supported).

Should you wish to output something that is not supported on the device
(shape fill to PDF, or transparency for PostScript), you will need to
pre-render to a bitmap and place that instead. To do so, select the
object(s) in question and export to a bitmap format like png, jpg, tiff
etc. Then reimport that bitmap and replace the objects with it.

I do have a new PDF export that will render shape and patterned
gradients to a bitmap and embed that automatically, but I don't have the
working for text yet (just objects so far).

Thanks for your kind words.

Hello Deron,

Thanks for your helpful reply.

I have one other question. Where do I find the PGS preferences on my old computer and can I simply copy them to my new computer?

With many thanks,

Terence Casey

Presuming you are talking about another OS X computer, PageStream
preferences are stored in ~/Library/Application Support/PageStream5.
You can copy the entire folder (it contains your preferences, user
dictionaries, etc).
